Speed Up RSS? FriendFeed's Going to Try

RSS is the backbone for most things Web 2.0 but these days, it's not always fast enough. Politeness limits ping times to every 15 minutes at best in most cases, string a couple of applications together and information will sometimes not arrive where you're waiting for it for up to an hour.

A number of people are trying to speed up the feeds but today sees the first public mention of a new effort lead by the guys at popular lifestreaming service FriendFeed. FriendFeed is working on an open source add-on to RSS and Atom that will make it easier to discover when a feed has been updated. This could be a big deal.

What it Is

The FriendFeed crew is working on something called a Simple Update Protocol. It was first reported on by venture publication The Deal and subsequently by Venture Beat, leading us to believe the PR push is an effort to for the company to raise some more money.

In response to our questions, FriendFeed co-founder Paul Buchheit told us the following:

RWW: How will it work?
Buchheit: SUP is just a very simple extension to RSS and Atom that makes it easier to discover when a feed has been updated.

RWW: Where is this relative to XMPP?

Buchheit: It's unrelated to XMPP.

RWW: Gnip? (See our coverage of Gnip, a startup that appears to be aiming to do what SUP will do and more.)

Buchheit: We're talking with several companies about supporting SUP, but aren't ready to announce anything.

RWW: Open source?

Buchheit: Yes, absolutely Open Source.

Not a whole lot of information is available about SUP, but we hope the above helps. We're real excited to see what FriendFeed has under its hat. The company has done more interesting things with popular use of RSS than anyone else has in awhile.

The Simple Update Protocol is due to be released next month. We look forward to checking it out. Soggy feeds put a damper on our day far too often. Update: FriendFeed has posted details about this on their blog.

Rumor: AT&T May Bid For Cable & Wireless

AT&T, the largest phone company in the U.S., may buy UK-based Cable & Wireless, according to The Guardian. The rumors were prompted by a research report by a local stock broker.

Cable & Wireless is one of those telecoms whose fortunes have followed the trajectory of William Shattner’s small screen career. It may have been Captian Kirk at one time, but now all it does is pitch cheap tickets and hotel rooms. Sorry, I meant it is a telecom company selling services to businesses.

Regardless, it is not such a bad rumor and makes sense for AT&T, which needs to make a move that moves the needle on its revenues, and C&W fits the bill. Cable& Wireless has a market capitalization of $8.5 billion and sales of $6 billion. AT&T clearly needs to do something — it is losing traction in the U.S. residential market at a dangerous clip, with customers defecting to wireless or cable companies.

A few months ago, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson, in an interview with USA Today, talked about making an audacious move — a big global partnership or a deal. “If you’re not pushing forward hard, nothing happens … You don’t do that by making little incremental moves. You’ve got to make big moves,” he told the daily. Maybe this (buying C&W) qualifies as a big move in San Antonio!

Cloning Ubuntu Hardy image in VMWare Fusion

Having spent the better part of a day googling and struggling, I figured it would possibly benefit others if I took a minute to post the steps I took to clone a VMWare Fusion image. The image in question is of Ubuntu Server (Hardy). I’m using VMWare Fusion 2 (beta 2).

Just find your “Virtual Machines” folder (should be in your Documents folder), and copy the image in question to a new location. (The images are actually folders; a simple “cp -R” worked fine for me.)

Then, open the copied image in VMWare Fusion and boot it. VMWare Fusion will ask if you if you copied or moved the image—be sure to say you copied it (that let’s VMWare set up a new MAC address for your image).

Go ahead and log in once the server boots. You’ll find networking is all hosed. To fix networking, this worked for me:

“sudo hostname blah”, to set the hostname. This doesn’t change it permanently, so you’ll also want to:
“sudo vim /etc/hostname”. Change the contents of the file to the hostname you want. Then:
“sudo vim /etc/hosts”. Replace all mentions of the old hostname with the new hostname.
“sudo vim /etc/udev/rules.d/70-persistent-net.rules”. There will be two entries in this file. The first points eth0 at the old MAC address, and the second points eth1 at the new. Go ahead and delete the first entry, and change “eth1” to “eth0” in the second (and now only) entry.
“sudo shutdown -r now” to restart your virtual machine.

Once your machine comes back up, you should have a network again! Now, if only VMWare Fusion could bake all this in somehow… :/

(Related: installing VMWare Tools on Ubuntu server. It’s from 2006, but it still worked well enough for me, though I followed the instructions for tweaking the network that the VMWare Tools install gave at the end, rather than what this gent said.)

So I have decided to save up some money and invest in flash.
I was looking at some cool flash sites today and i decided once i learnt how to use all the awesome flash stuff i would build a basic flash website.
I decided that i was going to make a portfolio.

So even though this will probably never go ahead i designed a template.
I would much appreciate your views on it.

I was going for a basic and neat but yet proffesional look.
