The New iPhone Is Apptastic!

Today’s launch of the 3G iPhone has some welcome changes to the phone itself, but also highlighted the details behind the iPhone development platform. It’s nice to know that when the iPhone comes out on July 11 a horde of programmers have been working around the clock to port and build applications for it. Below are some coming and existing attractions to download to your iPhone.

Productivity and Information (or things your boss won’t mind you using):

iCall: A free Wi-Fi VoIP calling service that allows a user to switch calls from the cellular to the Wi-Fi network, even mid-call. Very handy for saving your minutes. It’s still in beta, though.

Associated Press Mobile News Network: Native app from the AP to offer local news depending on location. Users can also contribute photos taken with their iPhone to the AP. Like almost all news on the web, it’s free.

LingoLook: This foreign-language flashcard maker is taking its paper products and digitizing them for the iPhone, costing $7.95 $4.99 for digital flashcards in each language. And because these cards are so cool, I’ll tell you that BlackBerry and PocketPC users can download them too.

Plum Record: From software firm Plum Amazing comes an app that will allow you to record lectures and reminders onto an iPod. I’d pick this one up in a New York minute if I had an iPhone.

MIMVista: This one lets a doctor move through a CT scan using his or her fingers. Now that’s an application that’s going to suck up some serious bandwidth.

Social:

Loopt: The location-based social network finds you and your friends, and then using GPS, shows where everyone is. You can use it to connect with Facebook friends or use Loopt as your network. It’ll be free through the iPhone App store and is also available to Sprint and Boost Mobile subscribers.

Whrrl: Social location-based service that allows you to see where friends are heading and what they think of specific places.

TypePad: Allows you to take a picture and post it to any of the TypePad blogs you contribute to and blog a bit.

Phanfare: Photo-sharing app take a photo and send it to the Phanfare site with or without captions. You can also view your albums on the Phanfare site and get messages when friends and family upload pictures. This should be the first of many mobile web photo sharing applications for the iPhone.

Shopping:

eBay Auctions: Brings eBay to the iPhone. The home page will show you what you’re bidding on, selling and watching.

Entertainment

Band: From Moo-Cow Music (a one-man shop staffed by an insurance software developer), this app allows users to create music on the iPhone. You can play a keyboard, guitar, drum kit, bass guitar and use a mixer to record songs. No word on when you’ll be able to upload said riffs to iTunes. It should be available “in a few weeks.”

Plum Caddy: Also from Plum Amazing, this golf scoring and mapping application could help chart your handicap and maybe improve it.

Readdle: Turn your iPhone into a Kindle for works of literature that have lost their copyright protection with Readdle, an on- or offline document reader.

Cro-Mag Rally: Racing game from Pangea Software for $10. It’s the Flinstones meets Grand Turismo (or maybe just Mario Kart).

Enigmo: Also from Pangea Software, this puzzle game was ported directly from OSX and looks like Tetris meets Pinball. For $10 to download it, I’d play it.

Sega Super Monkey Ball: The mobile version of Monkey World will set you back $10 but gives you 110 levels and five worlds of play.

Digital Legends Entertainment: Planning a fantasy role-playing game for the iPhone for $10 as well. This one should have poppin’ graphics and will be ready by September.

SlingPlayer: The masters of place-shifting will bring you their mobile version for the iPhone…eventually. It’s not ready yet, but iPhone users who have jealously watched their BlackBerry and Windows Mobile carrying-friends use the software will be happy to see it for the iPhone.

Rhythm New Media: The firm created vSNAX to provide free, ad-supported mobile weather, film clips, gossip and more to the iPhone.

MLB at Bat: An iPhone-specific app from MLB that will offer video replays right after the play has occurred and up-to-the-minute scoring information.
