Google Eyeing a VC Arm?

According to the Wall Street Journal, Google may be trying to build out a corporate venture capital arm similar to other strategic venture groups at companies ranging from Intel to Motorola. The Journal reports that Google SVP David Drummond will be in charge, and that the search giant has hired 33-year-old former entrepreneur and investor William Maris to help.

Since Google already invests in plenty of companies, from Current Communications to 23&Me, the genetic information company run by Sergey Brin’s wife, I don’t think this news it terribly new or exciting. It also has a program in place for clean and renewable investments as part of its philanthropic arm. And so far, its track record as an investor has been unproven or weak given issues faced by portfolio companies. Current faces lackluster BPL use, Meraki is trying to stay relevant and electric vehicles are still far out there.

When a company sets up a venture arm it needs to decide if the investments it makes are part of a money-making effort similar to the way Intel now invests its capital, or to push product lines or ideas. Google already invests in companies to further its technology goals, so it may be looking for a strategic arm to create financial returns.

The downside of setting up a formal investment arm is that investing in startups is a long-term effort and many public companies are driven by short-term results. In tough times, it can be hard to write down the value in the portfolio, as Dell and Boeing discovered after the crash. They have both discontinued their strategic investment groups.

Update: To create a successful strategic investment group a company really needs to focus, something Google has not historically done well. If the goal is to complement and push Google’s technology efforts, the comapny needs to figure out what those efforts should be, and ferret out the best startups in that sector. If the fund is motivated by returns, then Google will need to temper its desire to only get involved with the best, the brightest and the hottest items right now (You know like accepting a $17,000 a year daycare instead of $30,000), because valuations on those deals can be sky high. I’m not terribly optimistic that Google has the discipline to handle strategic investing, or even if it really should.

Il copywriter vive con la paura. Avrà una grande idea entro martedì mattina? Il cliente la accetterà? Andrà bene nelle ricerche? Venderà il prodotto? Non mi sono mai seduto a scrivere un annuncio senza pensare questa volta non ce la farò.

Anche l’account executive ha i suoi motivi di ansietà. Rappresenta l’agenzia dal cliente, e il cliente nell’agenzia. Quando l’agenzia sbaglia, il cliente dà la colpa a lui. Quando il cliente è intrattabile, l’agenzia dà la colpa a lui.

Anche il capo dell’agenzia ha le sue preoccupazioni. Perderemo il cliente tal-dei-tali? Ci lascerà uno dei nostri migliori collaboratori? Farò un fiasco nella presentazione di giovedì prossimo a un nuovo cliente?

Fate in modo che sia divertente lavorare nella vostra agenzia. Quando le persone non si divertono, non producono buona pubblicità. Uccidete la tristezza con una risata. Liberatevi delle persone deprimenti che spargono cattivo umore.

Che personaggi straordinari sono gli uomini e le donne che dirigono agenzie di successo? Secondo le mie osservazioni, sono entusiasti. Sono persone intellettualmente oneste. AOL has finally gulped Bebo and formed what it calls People Networks. AOL bought Bebo earlier this year for a heart stopping $850 million. The group will be run by Joanna Sheilds, formerly of Bebo. David Liu was working on the AIM, ICQ, Goowy and Yedda teams is joining the People Network. I have met him on a few occasions - smart guy. You can find more details in Randy Falco, AOL CEO’s memo below the fold. Also, check out this Financial Times article that points to Yahoo possibly lose the ad deal. No surprise, but timing is clearly not good.

I’m pleased to report that we’ve completed our acquisition of social networking pioneer Bebo, which will serve as the centerpiece of our reinvigorated community efforts and positions us to capitalize on this fast-growing space.

In addition, Joanna Shields, who so ably led Bebo since 2007, is coming on board as the head of our newly formed People Networks business unit. Kevin was also instrumental in our acquisition of Yedda and Goowy, and will continue to work closely with the Yedda team on the integration of their Q&A and the Goowy team on widget creation to drive higher engagement and monetization for our products.

I’m pleased that David Liu, who has done a great job leading the AIM, ICQ, Goowy and Yedda teams under Kevin, will be joining People Networks to continue to drive successes in these important platforms.

FCC Unimpressed by Comcast’s “Network Managment”

Listening to the FCC hearing today, which was called in response to Comcast throttling BitTorrent traffic on its network, it seemed like Chairman Kevin Martin may be rethinking his laissez-faire stance on Network Neutrality. Martin said that network management practices should be “open and transparent” to the end user and that the FCC would be “willing and able” to intercede in cases of abuse.

Comcast ~~CEO~~ Executive VP David Cohen, who argued that the company wasn’t blocking anyone’s content, but was merely trying to manage its network during times of peak traffic, didn’t come off too well. In the wake of the event, it seems that some form of Net Neutrality legislation or regulation to halt discrimination (to use the terms bandied about during the hearing) would be in the future for ISPs. Whether it goes as far as an Internet Bill of Rights that gives users the “unalienable right to liberty on the Internet,” as proposed by Democratic Commissioner Jay Alderstein, or some form of case-by-case adjudication of discrimination claims, as offered by Democratic Commissioner Michael Copps, is uncertain.

Given the anticompetitive nature of Comcast throttling traffic from a potential video competitor, Martin — who in the past has been loathe to go beyond the FCC’s current policy pushing open networks — and other Republican lawmakers seemed galvanized to act. Indeed, an attack on the free markets might be too much for the FCC to ignore.

Earlier this fall, Scott MacGregor and David Bienvenu, two key members of Mozilla Thunderbird team left Mozilla without indicating their next move. It is becoming clear, that they are close to launching a new email-oriented start up, and a handful of other Mozilla folks such as Seth Spitzer are joining up this yet-to-be-named start-up. A clue to their plans comes from this blog post by David Ascher, CEO Designate of Thunderbird.

There are even at least two companies who are starting from the same technology platform that we are: SpiceBird, and whatever Scott, David, Sherman and Seth will be working on (don’t ask me what it is, I have no idea!).

The move shouldn’t come as a surprise given how much time the Thunderbird team spent on making it one of the best IMAP clients on the planet, especially on the Windows Platform. I have said this before, I think there is an opportunity to build a new kind of interaction client - desktop or web-based, doesn’t matter that allows for an enhanced user experience and encompasses the every increasing communication tools.
