Kubuntu - Absolute beginners

Report from Cebit 2007

Last week, I've been to Cebit where I was responsible for the KDE booth on Monday and Tuesday.
I had been to several linux events in the past, but never to such a huge (commercial) event. On one hand, I was really impressed, but on the other hand, also a bit disappointed because I had expected much more invention and not just thousands of TFTs, though I have to admit that I didn't have the time to visit the whole fair - it was just too big.

At the booth, everything went fine - except that all the merchandise had been sold out the week-end before. Nevertheless, people were very interested in KDE. Chitlesh had a snapshot of KDE4 on his fedora laptop, while the other two computers had Kubuntu installed (edgy and feisty).
Experienced users were eager to see and hear about every snippet of KDE4, but there were also a lot of people who already had heard about linux but didn't dare the switch yet.

Luckily, on tuesday we had new T-Shirts and pin, so we had some more give-aways than "just" CDs we could hand out. We had a lot of Kubuntu and OpenSuse and some Fedora CDs/DVDs, and people were interested in all of the three. Generally, people were much more generous than at events like LinuxTag - e.g. someone who uses KDE for a very long time in his professional and private life and is very happy about it gave us 20€ without wanting any gadget or cd - and he was not the only one.

I was also surprised how many times people told me: "KDE, of course I know it - I use it!". A lot of OpenSuse users stepped by to have the new OpenSuse DVD, but some of them were also worried about Novell's previous switch to Gnome as well as about the Novell-Microsoft-Deal. One visitor (who runs Suse on 3000 desktop computers in his company) therefore was very interested in Kubuntu - technically but also in the philosophy behind Kubuntu. He liked its usability, lightweight and outfit, the fact that it's KDE and when I showed him Basket (in feisty now integrated in Kmail, yay!) he was intrigued and immediately asked for a CD to try it out and evaluate if it fits his needs. There were some other suse-users who want to try the switch to Kubuntu (mostly they're having problems with Yast or with the updates), but most of them were satisfied with the system they're using.

Another person who I talked to was an instructor looking for an apt distribution to teach his apprentices - he decided that the subject "Operating Systems" should also include linux and I gave him some CDs to try out which one would fit his needs.
Since I myself will (hopefully) be a teacher I was very glad to hear about this.

Generally, Kubuntu was very well received. People just loved Basket, but also Katapult proved to be a killer application. Most complaints concerned nvidia and even much more ati cards people could not get to work.

The Ubuntu booth was just in front us. I'm sure they have done a great job, but I noticed that mostly they had only two people at the booth (which, given the amount of visitors, is pretty few). Hopefully, next time there will be more volunteers to help them. A day at Cebit can be very exhausting if you try to talk to everybody, hand out CDs, answer questions, providing help, introduce the project, and especially being upright all the day. But it's also a lot of fun and interesting talks. Hopefully there will be a Kubuntu booth as well next year

The Canonical booth was not in the Linuxpark in Hall 5, but in Hall 1. On my first day, I stepped by and met Jono Bacon, and we had a very interesting talk. Our opinions may differ on certain points but basically I think we want the same thing - just with different road maps and different views.

Addictions

A little note before the posting: thank you all for the comments you left on my last entry. This subject is indeed important to me, and I'm happy that you care about it, too.

Now for the addictions: At the moment, I have three of them.
Computing, photographing, and (shame on me), watching tv. (Well, reading is one, too, but just for now I don't have one of those 800-pages-tome I like).

Two of my addictions have been merged together today, since I finally received the parcel containing the dvb-card which was a birthdaygift from my brother, his wife and my sister - thank you a lot my dears, I love you all!

The Terratec T2 worked out of the box - I just plugged it in and ran Kaffeine, and yoohoo:

It searched quickly for the twenty channels I can receive here in Frankfurt. With kaffeine-xine it works just fine. The only thing I'm struggling is the remote control. But I hope I will get it to work, too.

And I'm still in love with my lumix FZ20, as you can see on the springtime picture I took today (thank you Ruth for the flowers!)

Women in linux??

The last weeks, I dealt with the subject: Women in FLOSS. I use linux for about two years and I'm a contributor for more than a year now, and I always felt that as a woman I'm treated differently than other contributors (in both, positive and negative terms).

In the first instance, this blog posting is a response to several comments which were made on the blog of Mathieu in reaction to his blog posting where he published the complete French translation of the famous How to encourge women in linux. First, I want to say: thank you Mathieu for this posting!!

Most of the comments on his posting were pretty negative, and I get the impression that these people didn't read the howto or have a lack of information on the subject. But, instead of losing a lot of useless words, I just give you some figures from the FLOSSpols Gender: Integrated Report of Findings and some links (see below), in case that some of you are interested in the subject. I won't comment on the figures, since the Gender: Integrated Report of Findings already gives good explanations, and I invite you to read the whole report.

In two weeks, I'll be at Cebit (one of the world's largest technology events) in Hannover (last year they had over 400'000 visitors) which takes place March 15 - 21 2007. I'll be there at the KDE booth on March 19 and 20 with Chitlesh. I'm really excited to visit this event and especially to help on the booth, where I'll have the chance to present my favourite desktop. I also requested Kubuntu CDs via shipit, and I hope my request will be accepted and shipped timely.
So if you have time, why don't you just step by at the KDE booth?

Last weekend (March 3 and 4) we were doing the Kubuntu booth at the Chemnitzer LinuxTage.

Friday, Chitlesh (fedora), Monika and I, we took the train from Frankfurt to Würzburg, where ypsila and thefisist picked us up with their car. From there, it was an four hour ride to Chemnitz (in east Germany).
We spent the night in the gym nearby. It was my first time to do "Indoor Camping" at a linux event, and I think it probably was my last time, too, because it's almost impossible to really sleep there.

Nevertheless, the event was a great experience. We met a lot of interesting people, handed out about 200 Kubuntu CDs (dapper and edgy), talked to a lot of visitors and also had a good collaboration with the people from Ubuntu who had their booth next to us, and I hope it will be same for our next event, LinuxTag in Berlin (May 30 to June 2).

Let's make some baskets..

What it's all about
Recently I've been told about the new version of basket 1.0.
Neversfelde and Czessi (thank you guys!) made the package for our repo, and I have to say that I'm really impressed! Basket made a huge step forward and is now a really great tool to keep and organise ideas, notes, projects ...
The features I like most are adding tags to different notes ("important", "To Do", "Idea" etc.), encrypt baskets (with passwords or even better with my gpg-key), adding pictures, importing data from other apps (like Knotes), a lot more - and last but not least the very nice outfit - basket definitely has the "bling" factor!
I'd recommend just to install and play with it, and you'll see that you won't stop having new ideas

How to install
Basket 1.0 is not available from an official Kubuntu repo, but thanks to our community repository you can install it easily.
Just add

deb http://archive.kubuntu-de.net/ubuntu edgy main universe

to your /etc/apt/sources.list, and add the gpg-key:

wget http://archive.kubuntu-de.net/ubuntu/kczessi.gpg
sudo apt-key add kczessi.gpg

Then do:

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install basket

This is my actual project - I have to prepare a history lesson (middle age) and I'm putting together all my ideas, information, Todos, book titles etc. into a basket in order to get everything organised

The basket website (wich I strongly recommend to visit, great site which gives a good impression of the project) tells that it would work with kontact integration. At least for Edgy it doesn't, but hopefully for Feisty it will work. I would really love to see basket within one of my favorite applications!

And.. well, wouldn't it be great if baskets could be used for collaboration via net? Atm one has to export baskets and then send them per mail.. what I'd love is a way of working with different people at the same time on a basket . I don't know if that's possible, but honestly: wouldn't that be great?
[Update:] I've just been told that there's a project which plans to do something similar in the future. Unfortunately it's rather dead at the moment, but they're looking for people to continue the project, see here (at the end of the page: "Sync Using the BasKet Sharing Server")

German-Speaking Kubuntu Loco Team in Construction

Some of you may already have heard of it: At kubuntu-de.net grows the german-speaking Kubuntu Community.
I take this chance to present the team behind kubuntu-de.net who's working on getting kubuntu-de.net approved as an official LoCo Team. We are several very committed people working hard on helping to make Kubuntu "a No.1 distribution". Actually, we have over 5000 registered users and surely there will be many more in the future. We provide a package archive with up-to-date Kubuntu packages, we translate the Ubuntu Weekly Newsletter into German and provide also News from german-speaking areas, soon there will be a planet, and we're planning to represent Kubuntu during several events. The Community Council already honoured our work in approving our request for an official mailing-list:

kubuntu-de.net is on good route to become an official locoteam. They will try and cooperate with ubuntuusers.de and make Kubuntu rock in germany. Their request for a kubuntu-de maiilinglist was honoured and kubuntu-CC lists will also be available for kubuntu teams in other countries if they communicate well with the local Ubuntu team.(See the Community Council Agenda)

Die Informationen dazu gibt's von unserem Team von kubuntu.de jetzt auch auf Deutsch, und zwar hier (mit deutschen Zeitangaben). Da die Sitzungen und Tutorials aber alle auf englisch stattfinden, machen wir von kubuntu.de am Freitag parallel zum Ubuntu Freshers Day einen Deutschen Kubuntu Freshers Day. Wer also gerne etwas in der deutschen Kubuntu Gemeinschaft beitragen möchte, kann sich am Freitag ab 16.00 Uhr auf irc.freenode.net im Kanal #kubuntu-de-freshers informieren. During the preparation for the "Rentrée du libre" I translated the english kubuntu flyer into french. I had great support from benje and racoon97 from the french ubuntu community at their channel #ubuntu-fr on freenode. Thank you guys!

I also talked to Kenneth Wimer -we noticed that there's no central place where all the marketing stuff for kubuntu is to be found.

Report from the "rentrée du libre" at Strasbourg

I spent the last saturday on the "rentrée du libre", an F/OSS event in Strasbourg (France) where I made a kubuntu booth. It was the first time that I made a booth all on my own, and I have to say it was a bit stressful, but at the same time a great experience. After a horrible week everything went fine:
My laptop was finally fixed, I had enough CDs, flyers and even a poster.
A lot of visitors came to the booth to see and try out kubuntu, get answers to their questions and to chat about kubuntu, linux and free software in general.

Reccurrent questions concerned the difference between ubuntu and kubuntu (both, the technical side and the difference between the two projects), how the project works and what kubuntu provides in terms of accessibility.

There are some people who deserve my thanks because without them I really would have been stuck this week!

....First of all, czessi, who sent me 25 of his Kubuntu CDs so that I could make the booth at the "rentrée du libre". Thank you czessi!

...Second, kwwii who I bothered several times on IRC in order to get some of his artwork for a poster. It will defenitely be an embellishment of the booth

...and last but not least, the person who is responsible that I was obliged to use Gnome for almost a week and also obliged me to fight with a french keyboard - the person who safed my life (or at least my presentation for uni next week): Antoine, who did not even hesitate one second to lend me his 2000€ Laptop because mine was broken! Buddy, I really don't know what I would have done without you! You're the kindest geek ever!
And this is for you (if I was in Switzerland it would be swiss chocolate.. but hey, nothing's perfect )

Le 28 octobre 2006, le Groupe d’Utilisateurs Linux de Strasbourg organise sa Rentrée du Libre. Cet évènement, d’entrée libre, destiné à la fois au grand public et aux entreprises a pour objectif de présenter un panel d’acteurs du Logiciel Libre en Alsace.

Que vous représentiez une entreprises ou simplement en tant que particulier, vous pourrez venir poser vos questions, voir, manipuler et vous informer sur ce qui se cache derrière la déferlante Logiciel Libre.

Pour ce faire cette journée est composée de trois modules : conférences, table ronde et ateliers.

Le programme complet comporte des interventions de Frédéric Couchet, délégué général de l'APRIL, de Alain Cote, Conseiller TIC de la Région Alsace, Bruno Bonfils, pour une introduction aux PKIs, Thierry Stoehr, pour une conférence sur les formats ouverts et Stéphane Marchesin pour une conférence sur l'accélération matérielle dans Xorg et le projet Nouveau.

Divers ateliers auront également lieu.

English Version

Next Saturday (october 28th) there will be "la rentrée du libre" (homecoming of the "libre") in Strasburg, France. This event is organised by the local LUG, the "Flammekueche Connection". It is dedicated at the same time to the public at large and also to companies in order to inform them on Open Source Software and its actors in Alsace.

Whether you come as a represent of a company or as individual, you will have the possibility to ask your questions, see, tamper and get information about what's behind "Open Source Software".

The day is composed of three modules: conferences, roundtable and workshops.

The program includes the commitment of Frédéric Couchet, general delegate of APRIL, of Alain Cote ICT consultant of the region Alsace, of Bruno Bonfils for an introduction of PKI, Thierry Stoehr for a conference about open formats and Stéphane Marchesin for a conference about hardware acceleration in Xorg and the NouVeau project.

Also, different workshops will be held.

There will be a kubuntu booth, too, where I'll have the pleasure to talk to you.

The Strasbourg LUG at the Salon des Associations

I spent the last weekend at the Salon des Associations (association fair) in Strasbourg.
The local LUG (where I participate whenever I'm in Strasbourg) had a booth there. We distributed lots of Ubuntu, Kubuntu and even some Edubuntu - CDs, as well as loads of Fedora DVDs and Knoppix CDs.

Unfortunately in the afternoon of the first day we ran out of Kubuntu and Ubuntu CDs ... I just hope that for the next event - la fête de la science - we'll have some more.
Anyway, there was a lot of interested public and most of them non-geeks. I was very surprized that even some elder people were interested in switching to linux. A couple of visitors were even considerating switching to linux with their business.

Let's hope that soon we'll find some dates for install parties

I think it is in general a very good idea to be present at more "non-geeks" and "non-tech" - events. There are so many people who don't know about linux and its possibilities - and you'll never find them at a linux-event or any other tech-event. Kubuntu 6.10 Edgy Eft Beta is out!

The Beta Version of the next Kubuntu release, called "Edgy Eft" has come out!

What's New?

o improved accessibility
o power management
o multimedia button support
o hardware feedback application

Please note that this release is still beta. It is not recommended to use it for your production systems, but only for testing, reporting and fixing bugs.
The final release will come out in October 2006.
