PHP on SWiK

        <doap:name>PHP</doap:name>
        <doap:description>
PHP is one of the most popular scripting languages, designed specifically for Web application development.

PHP’s eclectic syntax draws upon C, Java, and Perl, and it is quite easy to learn and deploy. SourceLabs includes PHP in its Self Support for Linux and Open Source Java offering.

PHP or LAMP based applications are also considered to be extremely scalable, as the language discourages sharing state – to scale PHP applications often all that is needed is more server capacity.

PHP was originally invented as a set of Perl scripts released by Rasmus Lerdorf. Over the years the project evolved was eventually essentially taken over by Zeev Suraski and Andi Gutmans, who completely rewrote the engine behind PHP and later formed a company, Zend, that currently leads the development of said engine.

PHP is an extremely lax and loose scripting language, which has triggered a great deal of criticism from developers who fault it for its loose typing and inconsistent naming conventions. Other issues with the language include issues with legacy features that are now recommended to be turned off, such as ‘register globals’, and a lack of native unicode support.

PHP5

PHP has progressed a great deal since its inception, and the newest version, PHP5, currently offers object oriented programming features as well as XML and SOAP support. PHP5 represents a large step forward for PHP, however it is not completely backwards compatible with PHP4 and many web hosting companies do not support it.

For more on object oriented programming, see Object Oriented PHP.

This includes the end of support for all things PHP 4 as noted by seemingly everybody on php planet. But I also wanted to reminds people that the same is more or less happening in the MySQL world too. Did you know that active support for MySQL 4.x ended along with the year 2006? Did you even know that MySQL 5.0 active support is ending this year!?! Given MySQL 5.1 no show mentality, they might have to review this. Well there is of course extended support that extends MySQL 4.0 support until this year, MySQL 4.1 until the end of next year and MySQl 5.0 until the end of 2011.

Today is 8/8/8, which is interesting for a few reasons, one of which is that it marks the end of PHP 4. What does this mean? It means yesterday's release of 4.4.9 is the final release of PHP 4. More information can be gleaned from the mailing list archives, beginning with Derick's request to drop support:

I am trying to gauge what people feel about dropping support for PHP 4 at the end of this year.

Derick caveated his suggestion with the idea of continuing to publish new releases that address security vulnerabilities. Rasmus didn't see the point:

I don't really understand what dropping support means if we will still release security fixes. That's the mode we have been in for at least a year, so what would change at the end of the year?

He suggested a stronger stance:

I'd be more in favour of a statement that put a final death date on it which means no new releases of any sort. We could still say security-fixes only by the end of the year and then death by 08/08/08 or something like that.

So, here we are. PHP 4 is dead. Long live PHP.

On the PHP::Impact blog today Federico points out a few HTML DOM parsers that work similar to jQuery:

the Simple HTML DOM Parser

Zend_Dom_Query

phpQuery

Check out a previous tutorial of his for more information on using DOM parsers to scrape information from remote sites.

Local.ch Blog: Debug php in emacs with geben

On the local.ch blog today, there's this new post (from Philipp Kelle) showing how to, with the help of geben, easily debug your applications from emacs.

While PHP-developing it sometimes is just too tedious to do those 'add a echo here and there, then reload and search the echoed strings on the screen'-loops. So I searched for a debugger for my favourite editor emacs. After a lengthy install procedure I finally got it running: With geben on emacs you can debug PHP (step through and evaluate expressions).

The post steps you through the installation - adding in xdebug, changing the PHP configuration, and getting and installing geben (along with other required packages).

Maarten Manders' Blog: Static + Unit Tests = Arrrghhh!

Take a hint from Maarten Manders when renaming and moving around your unit testing order:

It's absolutely amazing how much you can mess up unit tests just by changing their order! (Trevi_* comes after Tilllate_*) Everyone knows that tests are supposed to be independent. But we all know how it is.

He asks for recommendations on what to do to help the situation. Comments on the post (including ones from Lukas Smith and Sebastian Bergmann) mention using PHPT, a new version of PHPUnit that will do just what he wants and whether or not to use Singletons.
