Unable to Switch User Error - su: no shell

We had some users complaining about not being able to switch or substitute user, su. Here is the error message they were receiving: "su: no shell.” At first I thought the users had inadvertently locked out their accounts. But after querying nisplus and checking the file-based users, I didn’t observe any locked accounts. I tried switching to various users from root and received the same error. Then I tried switching user on a different workstation - no problem. The problem was tied to a particular box.

Then we used the truss command to trace the system/lib calls. It pointed to an unexpected access/permission issue. Observed the /usr directory was set to 600. Frankly speaking, the permission problem was somewhat a surprise since it was working fine the previous day. At any rate, changed the permissions and things were back to normal.

My SIP Switch is a free VoIP service using open-source software under BSD license.

My SIPSwitch is an experimental service sponsored by Blueface Ltd that allows you to route multiple SIP accounts from different suppliers through a single SIP login. Simply put this means you can channel phone calls from several different VoIP providers through to one piece of hardware like an IP phone or an ATA.

My SIP Switch is a custumisable iPBX. You can set up a dial plan which will handle the way your outgoing calls and incoming calls are performed.

The dial plan is made of Ruby Scripting, which allows really powerful features : call forwarding, call blocking, ENUM lookups, availability checker, speed dial, local dialing adjustments … You can use Regular Expressions within the dial plan for a better pattern matching.

You can use the service directly on the website : www.mysipswitch.com or by installing your own instance on a Windows computer or on Linux.

Kawazu writes about the experience of taking an App that started as a Web App using the Spring Framework and changing it to Exploit more JavaEE features, specifically EJBs. The goal was not to remove the use of Spring but rather to leverage more effectively the Java EE support (like in the GlassFish Server and the NetBeans IDE).

I am beginning to see more positive indicators of warming up to EJBs. The JavaOne session on EJB 3.1 was in one of the big rooms and it was packed; check out Ken's previews from March, and stay tuned for updates in the next weeks.

BTW, note that you can install the Spring Framework on GlassFish Using the Update Center.
