Announcing OpenSQL Camp 2008

Along with some others, I have arranged a conference for open-source database users and developers.

Key facts:

It is of, by and for the community (you).

At this event, all open-source databases are created equal. We’ll learn together and grow together.

It’s a combination conference and hackathon.

It’s free.

It is Friday night Nov 14, 18:00 through Sun the 16th at 18:00 in Charlottesville, Virginia USA in a very cool location.

The website, where all details will be posted: http://opensqlcamp.pbwiki.com/

The mailing group, where details will be discussed, decided and arranged: http://groups.google.com/group/opensqlcamp

Date, time and place are confirmed and will not change. You can make your travel plans now. There’s travel information on the wiki.

We already have some great speakers who have offered to give great talks. These and other details will show up on the wiki as they’re finalized.

Sponsors are needed. See the wiki.

Despite the name, this will be different from other Camp conferences you’ve been to. This is a combination of a planned event (with great speakers and sessions), semi-planned spontaneity (sessions to be decided by attendees the night before), and a hackfest. It’s the best elements cherry-picked from all the conferences (and un-conferences) you’ve been to.

What should you do next? Go to the website and register yourself. Then go join the mailing list. And buy your plane tickets before they get too expensive. And tell your friends, and blog about it.

See you on the mailing list and the wiki!
conference

CloudCamp San Francisco

On the eve of Structure 08 in San Francisco, the folks behind many of today’s cloud computing initiatives will be gathering at CloudCamp. GigaOM is one of the evening’s sponsors:

CloudCamp was formed in order to provide a common ground for the introduction and advancement of cloud computing. Through a series of local CloudCamp events, attendees can exchange ideas, knowledge and information in a creative and supporting environment, advancing the current state of cloud computing and related technologies.

If you’re in the city, come check it out. The event, which will be held from 5-9 pm on June 24th, is community-backed and free to attend. And it will be a great primer on cloud computing.

StumbleUpon Gets into Search

StumbleUpon, the social Web service, is doing something pretty cool. No, it’s not going to earn back the $75 million eBay (EBAY) paid for it. But it’s going to start overlaying the information its members have provided about a Web page — whether they like it or don’t, and what they’ve written about it — onto the rest of the web.

StumbleUpon’s product is a toolbar which learns about people’s preferences for Web pages to help them find new ones they’ll like, and the company has collected 100 million ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ for Web pages and 13 million reviewed Web pages over the years.

If StumbleUpon has data for a page it will overlay so-called “SearchReviews” right next to the regular search results page on Google (GOOG), Yahoo (YHOO), MSN, Ask, Flickr, Wikipedia, Yahoo News, YouTube, and Google News. You can see if your StumbleUpon friends like a page, and pivot on a category associated with that page to find more recommended stuff.

StumbleUpon founder Garrett Camp has two good justifications for his tool as compared to other social search engines (such as Wink and Eurekster), which have yet to give the front-runners much of a challenge (then again, places two, three, and four are having trouble giving Google much of a challenge!).

As Camp points out,

1) StumbleUpon has tons of data, so it will already be useful at launch — in internal testing StumbleUpon apparently had results for at least 60 percent of queries.
2) People are unlikely to switch to a new search engine, and the new StumbleUpon feature doesn’t require them to.

So will StumbleUpon SearchReviews be integrated into eBay — or is StumbleUpon bound to be another Skype?

“Not yet,” is Camp’s answer — he says the product will have to be significantly changed to incorporate data about auctions as opposed to Web sites. StumbleUpon apparently isn’t expected to do any integration with eBay for at least the next six months.

MySQL Camp 2007

I caught most of the second day of MySQL Camp 2007. It was fun and educational as before. The format was a little different than the last Camp; everything was in one room. Google and Proven Scaling provided food.

Sessions were loosely organized, to say the least, but that’s what an un-conference is [...]

Are You Ready To Bar Camp?

Bar Camp, an open multi-day event where people can share ideas and talk about just about anything they like, is a very important event for me. Two years ago I attended the first Bar Camp, which was held at Social Text’s offices in Palo alto. It was just a few weeks after starting TechCrunch, and nearly everyone I met there is now a friend. It was held just before all the craziness happened with the web, and the people who were starting companies weren’t expecting much of a return - they were doing it out of passion.

Pandora and TechMeme launched at the event, and we got our first glimpse of Flock. My notes on the event are here and here.

Since the original event there have been over 150 Bar Camps held around the world. 10,000 or so people have attended at least one of them.

This year, Bar Camp is back at the original location at Social Text’s offices in Palo Alto. But far more people are going to attend, so the organizers (Chris Messina, Ross Mayfield, Liz Henry, Tantek Çelik and Tara Hunt) have received city permission to take over the entire block (and so the event is called Bar Camp Block) At least 1,000 people are expected to flow through the three day event.

Event information is here. You can also sign up to attend at that link. See you there.

WengoPhone's Scripting Engine's design has advanced (a lot!) since my last post. Please check out the progress on the project's Wiki page.

Working on it made me remember a little known rule that may have much to say about WengoPhone: Philip Greenspun's Tenth Rule of Programming. It basically states
any sufficiently complex system includes at least one scripting language interpreter
As WengoPhone may soon include several, this could mark its coming of age.

Hello! My name is Ovidiu, and I'll be developing WengoPhone's Scripting Engine during CodeCamp. It sure beats working in a sweatshop, or at the Golden Arches during summer!!

So check out the wiki entry for my project: CodeCampWengoPhoneScriptingEngine
and the Trac Subversion repository browser for WengoPhone NG which will soon include a subversion, where the code and the docs I'll write will be available.

MySQL Camp Free Ride goes to Adam Ritter

And, the winner is……

Adam Ritter, of Nashville, Tennessee has been selected by Proven Scaling for a free ride to MySQL Camp!

Adam’s enthusiasm and very quick (within the first few hours of my original post), yet courteous and complete entry impressed us. His excitement to learn, and professionalism sealed the deal. Here’s an excerpt from his entry:

My name is Adam Ritter and I’m a recent Computer Science graduate from UT Knoxville. I’m currently looking for a job and I realized that being a DBA is what I want to do. I had started working with MySQL back in a course on Database Design and Management course I took in school. This course started the fire inside of me but unfortunately, it was over all too soon and I was left wanting to learn more. I’ve read through every intermediate MySQL source I could find, but I’m looking for as much advanced and expert level topics as I can find. I’ve worked on projects utilizing MySQL and have grown very fond of it.

If you’re attending MySQL Camp in a few weeks time, be sure to say hello to Adam!

Thanks, everyone! Keep an eye on my blog early next year for a similar offer for MySQL Conference & Expo 2007!

Free Ride Deadline Extended

I realized earlier that having the MySQL Camp Free Ride offer open for only 24 hours is a bit harsh, and needlessly short. I’ve extended the deadline to midnight, Friday, October 20 to give everyone a chance.

I’ve also clarified that the offer is open to all, not only to students.

Good luck!

Want a Free Ride to MySQL Camp?

Have you heard of MySQL Camp at Google HQ in Mountain View, California, November 10-12?

Want to go? Can’t go because it’s out in sunny (ha, ha) California, hundreds or thousands of miles/kilometers from where you live?

Maybe you’re a bright student, or maybe you’re currently unemployed, or maybe you’ve got a job, but you just can’t afford to jet out to Mountain View for the weekend. Maybe you contribute code, bug fixes, tools; maybe you run a MySQL Meetup, and just can’t bear the airfare.

Proven Scaling would like to sponsora one such person to attend MySQL Camp! We’ll pay for your airfare and hotel—meals and transportation are on you. If you think you are qualified, you live somewhere in the USA or Canadab and you know you can make the trip, send us (with “MySQL Camp Free Ride” in the subject) the following information:

Your full, real name

Your blog or website, if any

Your company, school, or organization, if any

Your location, and closest airport

Any contributions you’ve made to MySQL or the MySQL community in the form of code, bug fixes, time, or otherwise

Why you feel you are the best or most qualified person for Proven Scaling to sponsor to MySQL Camp

Anything else you’d us like to know about yourself as we consider who to sponsor

However, you’d better hurry as you have only the next 60 hours or so to submit your proposal — no proposals will be accepted after midnight Pacific Daylight Time (GMT-8), Friday, October 20, 2006.

Good luck!

Update: Extended (and clarified) the deadline to midnight Friday instead of Thursday morning. Just to be clear: anyone is eligible, not just students.

a And, we’d encourage other companies attending or sponsoring MySQL Camp to do the same!

b If you live elsewhere, such as Europe, and you think you can get to the Bay Area fairly cheaply (lets say, under 1000 USD or so), or if you are just super qualified, feel free to send us your proposal anyway, and include how you propose to get to Mountain View cost effectively.
