As a resident of San Francisco, I can say how much I hate tow trucks since they towed my car without warning. It just happens that tow trucks “wait” around parking lots to tow cars.

Okay, that said, here’s a cool DIY air suspension system made for tow trucks, I hope it doesn’t make it to the market, I really don’t like technology improvements for tow trucks. I think people in tow trucks are one of the “lowest” grade jobs out there along with parking meter people. Don’t get me wrong, tow trucks are just really “bad” in San Francisco. If they start doing things more “legally”, I’d have to change my mind though, but that’s not going to happen in this bad economy-era.

Gadget Freak James Kinney was looking for a way to take the pressure off the back end of a tow truck when it’s carrying a heavy load. If you can equalize the pressure of the truck bed so all the weight is not on the back end, there will be less stress to the truck’s suspension system. Kinney developed the air suspension system, called the Mechatronic Microcontroller, in his mechatronics’ class at Colorado State University. The gadget uses a resistive touchscreen from an electronic Sudoku game to select the ride height of the tow truck’s bed to make it level, thus spreading the stress of the towing weight evenly across the truck’s suspension.

Bailout Passes Senate with Monster Tax Breaks Attached

As expected, the bailout bill (with extra sweetener) has passed the Senate. The vote was 74-25 with both John McCain and Barack Obama voting in favor of the plan.

The bill the Senate passed is virtually identical to the one the House rejected on Monday. The only real difference is the add-ons. The most directly related of these so-called sweeteners is the provision to raise the cap on federal deposit insurance from $100,000 to $250,000. But there’s also $110 billion in tax cuts stapled onto the bill. And, as you would expect from this spendthrift Congress, there are no provisions as to how to pay for the tax cuts.

Why am I not surprised that this Congress’ solution to a bill that didn’t pass is not to change the bill but to bribe one another into voting for it anyway? Even though one of the tax cuts includes rescuing 20 million middle-income Americans from the onerous alternative minimum tax, I’m not at all pleased that a bill designed to save us from reckless financial decisions is now saddled with reckless budgetary management. Are we really in a position to add $110 billion to our national debt? This is like declaring bankruptcy and then going out and buying a yacht on credit.

Predictions are that the sweeteners will be enough to convert a handful of House Republicans over to the aye side, thus passing the bill. Then again, some Blue Dog Democrats are apparently upset about the tax breaks. So while the bailout has hope to pass the House in the next few days, I don’t think anyone is going to declare victory until the votes are actually cast.

We’ll see what happens.

Having had little time to follow the news for a couple of days, I've been surprised at how little Paulson's proposed plan has managed to improve after a period of what one would have expected to be intense academic, media and public scrutiny. Apparently plenty of people who are following are less than pleased.
