Yesterday, one day after taking down Scrabuluos in the U.S. and Canada in response to a lawsuit from Hasbro, the Indian brothers behind Scrabulous, Rajat and Jayant Agarwalla, released a brand new crossword-like game on Facebook called Wordscraper. The brothers have obviously been preparing this countermove for a long time. Wordscraper is designed to get around any of the intellectual property claims Hasbro has made against Scrabulous, especially the trademark infringement claims. The name is not a rip-off of Scrabble, the board looks very different, and there are even some new twists to the rules.

The brothers have even foregone the familiar square tiles for circles. Quite frankly, I don’t like this. It hurts my eyes. (Call me a traditionalist). It all blends together and makes it hard to grok the board at a single glance.

The gameplay is much better. Wordscraper is like Scrabble with wild board tiles. You can create your own board by putting assigning different point values to each space where a player puts her letters. For instance, instead of a set pattern, you can move double-word or triple-letter score tiles around the board before you start playing, and you can go crazy and stick in quintuple-word scores. (Go easy on those).

When Scrabulous was taken down, it had half a million daily active users and Hasbro’s/Electronic Arts’ official Facebook Scrabble game had only about 15,000. Two days later, the official Scrabble beta is up to 63,000 daily active users. Wordscraper has 3,600 daily active users. Now the race is on. Where will the bulk of Scrabulous fans go?

Wordscraper has a good chance of unseating the official Scrabble. (In a TechCrunch poll with 2878 respondents, 66 percent think that Hasbro went too far with its lawsuit and will suffer a resulting consumer backlash). Just please, do something about those circles. They make me dizzy.

Long outplayed by two Indian brothers, Hasbro finally delivers a massive counter blow to Scrabulous, one of the most loved games on Facebook. Scrabulous fans in North America will see the following message when they try to play the game:

Scrabulous is disabled for U.S. and Canadian users until further notice. If you would like to stay informed about developments in this matter, please click here.

Hsbro has long contended that Scrabulous infringes on its trademarks for Scrabble. It licenses the North American digital rights for Scrabble to Electronic Arts, which announced its own Facebook version of the game earlier this month. (RealNetworks owns the international digital rights, and is not taking as aggressive a stance against Scrabulous).

Last week, Hasbro filed suit against the owners of Scrabulous, Rajat Agarwalla and Jayant Agarwalla. The same day, EA publicly launched its officially-sanctioned Scrabble game on Facebook. (See screen shot below, which I took that day).

Hasbro and EA planned their moves very methodically and waited patiently for their chance to strike. Perhaps EA felt that it could not compete with Scrabulous other than by taking it out at the knees. Scrabulous boasts 509,505 daily active users. EA’s Scrabble Beta has 14,956 (after only five days). Now, the question is whether Scrabulous fans will boycott the official version of Scrabble on Facebook or switch over to satisfy their word lust.

Update: EA’s Scrabble app seems to be down on Facebook. Maybe they weren’t ready for the surge in traffic.

FEL: updates on the 'toped 0.9.0' startup crash

If you get the following with toped 0.9.0

Toped can't obtain required GLX Visual. Check your video driver/setup please

This is because a graphic card driver is not installed.

That's the Xorg driver. It doesn't seem to maintain accumulation buffers and upstream needs them for the interactive graphics. On fedora 8, there should be no problem.

Upstream is trying to get to Xorg people about this, since weeks. This is the trouble from the very beginning (with f9). I didn't have a protection. That's another long story, but wx guys did something already, however it is not in their latest release. Whatever - the protection is now there, but it is not making the toped running for f9. On f9, there is no ATi or nVidia driver because of the state of Xorg and Mesa. We is trying to find a workaround because as it seems it will be quite some time until f9 gets vendor drivers.

The root problem appears when you run toped using GPL drivers - non vendor drivers. There is no protection and the program is giving segmentation fault. We have now patched toped 0.9.0. So if you run patched version (even on f8) without ATI or nVidia driver - it will not crash. Thus I'll recommend you to update your 'toped' package coming with the updates very soon.

Since the last few months, we are recruiting new contributors for Fedora Electronic Lab. The need for a mailing list has become a necessity.

However, we are not in the same timezone and it is difficult for me to breakdown different tasks and assigning these tasks to these new contributors (also I'm teaching them the Fedora way and rpm packaging).

This Mailing list will also serve as a common ground to gather upstream developers (for FEL), in the long run. Thus with upstream developers, we can work together to ensure more interoperability with different applications and ultimately ensuring different design flows with at least the well known hardware description languages (such as VHDL and Verilog)

The electronic world is quite vast, and not everyone is a specialist in all areas. I'm a micro-nano-electronics guy, thus for now we have mostly applications for microelectronics in FEL. Our new recruits are embedded specialists. Thus we need to discuss and decide a roadmap for applications which will be included into FEL.

Official Facebook Version of Scrabble Spells Doubt For Scrabulous

Facebook now has vaporware. After a lot of huffing and puffing at the beginning of the year, Hasbro and Electronic Arts are finally getting ready to unveil their official version of Scrabble on Facebook. Today, they announced that the Facebook app EA has been working on for more than six months will be launched later this month, although a version on Pogo (EA’s online casual gaming site) is available today.

There is a Facebook Scrabble app in private beta (see screen shot at left), but the company is still testing it. It is not clear what is taking EA so long. After all, this is just a Facebook app, not a fully-featured video game like Spore.

It is also not clear what will happen to Scrabulous, the unofficial version of Scrabble that has become one of the most popular apps on Facebook. Scrabulous, which was developed by two brothers in India, was almost shut down earlier this year because Hasbro claims that it infringes on its trademarks. Scrabulous was in acquisition talks with many different companies, including Electronic Arts (which has the domestic license to digital versions of the game) and Real Networks (which has the international digital rights), but everyone balked on price.

Rather than force Facebook to shut down Scrabulous immediately, however, Hasbro and Electronic Arts realized that they would suffer an extreme backlash if they took away everyone’s favorite Facebook game without offering up an alternative. Now that the alternative is almost here, it remains to be seen whether they will try to eliminate the competition. In response to question about what Hasbro now plans to do about Scrabulous, spokesperson Gary Selby respondsl:

Hasbro has been consistent in stating that Scrabulous infringes upon our intellectual property, and we are keeping our legal options open. Today we are focusing on the coming launch of EA’s legitimate social networking version of SCRABBLE. We have no further comment at this time on Scrabulous and our legal strategy going forward.

What is clear is that if Hasbro and EA allow Scrabulous to live, the official version of Scrabble will have a hard time gaining any traction. Real Networks launched an offical version of Scrabble for Facebook members outside the U.S. and Canada a while back, and it has attracted a grand total of only 5,643 daily active users, compared to the 451,107 people who play Scrabulous every single day.

Because of the licensing issues, the EA version of Scrabulous will also be geographically hobbled. Only Facebook members in the U.S. and Canada will be able to play each other. If you live in the U.S. and want to play a friend in London, forget about it. Then there is the simple inertia of people who may see little point in installing the official version if they and all their friends already have Scrabulous installed.

What this means is that EA’s official version of Scrabulous, which it has committed resources to develop, may have little chance of success unless EA can get rid of Scrabulous first. But if EA and Hasbro try to push players to their version of the game by forcing Facebook to shut down Scrabulous, they will still have to deal with a lot of angry Scrabulous fans. Do people love Scrabble so much that they don’t care whose version they play, or will they boycott the game in solidarity with two developers in India? We may soon find out.

Apparently, some electric and electromagnetic doors can be opened easily with these giagantic magnets.

The ‘ring of the devil’ is capable of attacking this kind of electronic motor lock on two ways.

Scenario 1: An electronic motor is nothing more then a metal part on an axe that turns because of a changing magnetic field. Turning electro magnets on and off will generate a pulling force on the metal part, making it rotate. The ring does the same thing. By turning the ring, the metal part in the electro motor starts turning, opening the lock. As Rop suggested in the comments of the previous posting, a bunch of bigger magnets and maybe a high-speed drill can amplify this effect some more.

Scenario 2: A dynamo is nothing more then a coil charged by a changing magnetic field. So any coil in the lock will start generating current when a magnetic field is rotating around it. If the coil is in the path of the electro motor, it might generate enough current for the motor to start turning.

Currently we are testing with this magnetic ring. Jord Knaap and Han Fey already found one other electro/mechanical lock that seems to open under some conditions with this technique. As with all problems we personally discover, we are first going to notify the manufacturer to give them some time to analyze the problem. But with the ‘devils ring’ out on the free market it will probably be a matter of day’s/weeks before other people will find (and report) locks that are vulnerable to it.

A Sneak Peek at Spore, EA’s Ultra-Web 2.0 Game

I finally understand why Spore has been delayed for so long. Originally expected for a 2007 release, the simulated evolution game from Electronic Arts (ERTS) studio Maxis was suddenly withheld, much to EA’s chagrin. Maxis head Will Wright explained the delay, saying that the company wanted to make the follow-up to its wildly successful Sims franchise more accessible.

That turns out to be an understatement, as I found out yesterday at an advance press peek hosted at Maxis’ Emeryville, Calif. office. During the hold-up, Wright and his team (led by Executive Producer Lucy Bradshaw) re-tooled Spore into a Web 2.0 phenomenon designed to extend far beyond the actual game. A perfect example is the thumbnail pic above, from a YouTube video of the Spore monster I made with Maxis’ Spore Creature Creator, which is being released on June 17. (The full game won’t hit shelves until September.) The YouTube video creation and upload process is seamlessly embedded in the Creator software. As Bradshaw explained, the fan community’s ability to create and share Spore content is just as important as the game itself.

But that’s just the start.

By releasing the Creature Creator months before the game, Maxis is encouraging its fan base to develop a vast international ecology of user-created content. (It’s launching simultaneously on both Mac and PC, and the community sites will be available in 22 languages.) That includes a “MySpore” page for each player, which as the cheeky name suggests, is part of a social network for Spore creatures, and has similar functionality to MySpace and Facebook — your Spore Creature can friend other Creatures and share content across the system. (If the game becomes successful, it’s easy to imagine kids abandoning their real-world social networks for MySpore.) There’s an embeddable Spore web widget, and even an RSS feed, so you can track comments made on your MySpore page.

At the beginning of Spore’s development cycle, Bradshaw (pictured above) told me, “Sharing was intended to be under the hood” of the larger game. Instead, Maxis has made it the key feature — a testament to Web 2.0’s influence and a response to the what its passionate fan base has done with previous games. (The Sims games have a vast network of fansites featuring screenshots and machinima.)

Perhaps most ambitious, the content-sharing aspects of the Creature Creator can actually be integrated into Spore gameplay. While Maxis has made its own beastiary for the solo game, players can import their friends’ user-created creatures into it too, via a “Sporepedia” buddy list. The game tracks creatures’ meta data, and deposits them where appropriate in the game’s evolutionary timeline. You can even set preferences for the kind of creatures you prefer in your game, and Spore will search the player-made database for appropriate species and send them to your computer. (Sort of a TiVo for monsters.) Bradshaw told me Maxis is hoping to publish aggregated creature data on its site, showing which species are most popular and successful. It’ll be fun to see what creatures thrive in a kind of crowd-sourced simulation of Darwinian selection.

But will Spore appeal to a wide audience? The Sims succeeded so much because it was embraced by girls and women, who tended to enjoy its anarchic, virtual dollhouse quality — 60 percent of its player base is female. With its emphasis on spoogy, fanged creatures, by contrast, Spore seems more immediately appealing to boys. Bradshaw told me the game has tested well with girls, and anecdotally, even got her mom to enjoy it. Even more anecdotally, I challenged a nearby publicist named Katie (pictured left) to try her hand at the Creature Creator, and while hardly a hardcore gamer, she managed to whip up a scarily toothy snake-like beast as inventive as anything the dudes with the game press were making at nearby demo PCs.

“Making things,” as Bradshaw put it, “turns everyone on.”
