Header Trouble

So my plan is to have a different background color for the header than the background color for the body. The background color for the header pretty much encompasses everything I want it to encompass EXCEPT between the logo and the navigation there's a small gap of space that has the background color for the body instead of the background color for the header.

So I tried making a little spacer bar with the background color of the header in Paint Shop Pro to see if it would fill the gap, but it only made it look worse. So I'm not sure how to go about filling up that space so the entire header looks unified in one background color.

When any designer is starting out, the body of work they would normally show off to potential clients to woo and wow them, isn't exactly there yet. So what's the poor designer to do? How does one work up a sizable and stunning collection of work? Some say the answer is padding.

One of my interactive design projects, a video microsite for the UK band Spiritualized, was recently selected as Communication Arts’ webpick of the day. The site acts as a retrospective for the band as well as a promotion for their new album, tour and video. The main objective of this project was to introduce their music to a younger audience while providing an online experience for their die-hard fans to enjoy as well.
