DIY - How to Build a Hard Disk Green Laser Projector!

Here’s a really cool DIY showing you how to build a hard disk laser scanner made from bunch of old hard disks.

My latest tinkery hardware and embedded systems project is a homebrew laser scanner. You know, the kind you see at planetariums- sweep a laser beam around on the wall really fast, and draw vector graphics. Commercial laser scanners have been around for decades now, but buying a complete system is still really pricy, even on eBay. Besides, where’s the fun in that?

There are plenty of examples of homebrew laser scanners on the internet. Many people have wired up a pair of loudspeakers, hard disk actuators, or other readily available mechanisms to an amplifier and used them for simple laser graphics. This will make some pretty wiggly patterns on the wall, but it isn’t a real vector graphics display. The best example I know of for a totally built-from-scratch laser projector (not using commercial galvo actuators) actually uses custom hand-wound galvanometers. Very nice.

Alexader Gurko’s “Begging Bot” plays music just by synching up the sounds a floppy and hard drive makes when spinning their motors. After the song is done, the CD drives opens up and the bot asks for donations from the public. The sound is actually pretty interesting if you watch the above video.

It is fairly common for companies to dispose of their obsolete hard drives. However, most of them want to ensure all data is shredded from the hard drives. Finding a Windows-based wipe program was fairly easy, but finding a UNIX-based program took a little more searching. BCWipe is a program that will wipe a UNIX-based hard drive clean. The BCWipe website claims their multi-platform UNIX version is intended to give you a confidence that your deleted files cannot be recovered by an intruder. BCWipe repeatedly overwrites special patterns to the files to be destroyed.

Note: Most likely you will have to compile the source code for your particular platform architecture.

BCWipe for UNIX offers the following wiping schemes per their site.

1. US DoD 5220.22-M standard (7 passes with verification)
2. User-defined number of passes
3. Peter Gutmann's 35 pass scheme

BCWipe for UNIX is designed as a multi-platform solution. Here is their supported list of various UNIX flavors.

FreeBSD 3.0-4.6
OpenBSD 2.8
Solaris 8-10
Digital UNIX 4
SGI Irix 6.5 (wiping block devices was not tested)

A LInux utility for getting information (including performance) about hard drives and changing there configuration.

The following options are allowed:

-d: enables/disables DMA transfers.

-X: fine tuning for the DMA transfers.

-A: for look ahead when reading disk blocks.

-c: enable IDE 32 bit support.

-C: very important for laptops (power management features)
