Alright, so you are also interested in having a 10 Second PC. Does sound like having a 10 second car, isn’t it? It also reflects that we all don’t like waiting for your PCs to boot and every millisecond delay feels like a minute and every minute feels like an hour.

How to Rock Flickr Like a Champ

Yahoo's wildly popular photo sharing site Flickr is a lot of fun to use, but it really helps to take some time and learn how to use it well. We've recently engaged more seriously with Flickr and wanted to share some quick tips that we think will help you get more out of it, too.

digg_url = 'http://digg.com/arts_culture/How_to_Rock_Flickr_Like_a_Champ';digg_bgcolor = '#ffffff';digg_skin = 'normal';Some people want to know how to do marketing on Flickr or use Flickr in nonprofit organizations, but in this post we're going to talk about ways you can enjoy the Flickr more for any purpose.

Set Up Publishing By Phone

The single biggest factor in changing our relationship with Flickr has been taking the time to set up publishing for photos taken by mobile phone. It's really quite easy. Just go to the email tab in your Flickr account and make note of the unique email address for you to post. Then pick up your phone, create a new contact named Flickr and enter that email for the contact.

Now take a photo and send it by MMS (Multimedia Message Service) to your buddy Flickr. Like magic, that photo will be published to your Flickr account. The subject line of the email will be the title, any text in the body will be a description. Knock yourself out, it's super fun. I don't know why it took us so long to figure out how this works, but we're betting that many of you haven't yet either.

Turn on Creative Commons Licensing

It's easy to turn the default setting for new photos uploaded to Creative Commons Attribution (our favorite) by visiting the Privacy & Permissions tab in your account. Unfortunately there's not clear, working links from Flickr to an explanation of the different licenses. Here they are on the Creative Commons site.

CC Attribution is a license that says other people can use it and change it, including in a commercial context, as long as they give you attribution as the creator. It greases the wheels for quick and easy media sharing. That's good and it would be nice if more quality media was licensed this way. We keep a link to the Creative Commons by Attribution search on Flickr in our browser toolbar and use it frequently for photos in posts. Those could be your photos we and others are using!

Video about the theory of Creative Commons

Take Even Better Photos

Attendees of the Gnomedex conference this year (which was a huge home run, by the way) were treated to an opening session with photographer Kris Krug about how to take better photos. That session isn't available yet in video, but Krug is a fun guy to pay attention to. Other popular photography bloggers worth checking out for inspiration and occasional instruction include Thomas Hawk (see his January post Top 10 Hacks on Flickr), Scott Beale (one of our 10 favorite sources for finding wonderful things), Epic Edits (see their post Five Fantastic Flickr Photographers), Rebekka Guðleifsdóttir and Jeremy Cowart. We're sure readers here can share some more good ones.

Those folks are all fancy pants, though, and many of us just want to have fun posting photos from our phones. Check out this handy 5 minute video from VideoJug about how to take better mobile phone photos. Thanks go to Amit Agarwal again for posting this one last year. We're excited to try out some of these tips.

Share Screen Shots

Another way we've been using Flickr lately has been to share screen shots of interesting things we find online. Some of us here at RWW use Jing for this, others use the beautiful Mac app Skitch.

People like interesting screen shots and these apps make it really easy to shoot them up to your Flickr account with just a click. The reigning king of this practice right now is Chris Messina, but you don't have to be a super-early adopter to make screen shots on Flickr useful. Skitch makes annotation easy as well and sharing annotated screen shots is a great way to explain things to people.

Video demonstration of Skitch.com.

Turn on Your Grease Monkey

We use a number of Grease Monkey scripts that enhance the Flickr experience. If you aren't familiar with Grease Monkey, you must learn about it because it's great. See our recent post How to Start Using GreaseMonkey in Under 5 Minutes. Specifically, we use:

FlickrPM puts links to viewing and profile options in all the right places, where they aren't right now on Flickr.

GreasedLightbox sets up real quick little image slide shows from almost any page. It can also be a pain to use when you're on Flickr, to tell the truth. It works better on Ffffound, which is another great site if you like imagery.

AutoPagerize lets you zip through page after page of Flickr photos with no clicking or page load delays.

What are your favorite GreaseMonkey scripts for Flickr?

Use a Bulk Uploader

Grabbing a whole bunch of photos from your computer and putting them on Flickr is easier than you might think. We think Flickr's own bulk uploader is fun to use. Thomas Hawk prefers JUploadr.

GeoTag Your Photos

Did you know you can open a drop-down menu in the Flickr search box and search by location? You can also go directly to http://flickr.com/map and search by location. Flickr, all of Yahoo really, does a great job understanding location data - but you've got to play to win, you know? Many people (ourselves, for example) have never found geotagging on Flickr very easy to do.

Enter this awesome bookmarklet from startup Loc.alize.us. It makes geotagging your photos super easy, if not downright fun. You can increase your discoverability, participate in the geotagging scene and feel smarter by grabbing that bookmarklet, renaming it in your browser toolbar and then going to town. Which town? You'll be surprised by the sophistication of Flickr's comprehension of location information.

Follow the Flickr Blog To Keep Up to Date

Flickr has a really active community and thriving forums, but subscribing to the company blog is a good idea to stay up to date with new features. If you don't want to read all the entries there, and some of them are more important than others, then consider subscribing to just the highly discussed posts from the company.

Have Fun Off-site

It's not just on Flickr itself that you can have fun with your posted photos.

Last week Flickr released a handy slide show tool for embedding slide shows of your or any photos on a blog or social network.

There are lots of great ways to visualize Flickr photos by tag, but Tag Galaxy will probably knock your socks off if you haven't seen it before.

Turning on Flickr sharing in FriendFeed is a great way to bring more of your friends into the photo part of your life. You can hook up with the RWW staff's personal FriendFeed accounts here if you'd like to see our photos and other activities.

Dave Winer's FlickrFan is a screen saver slide show of Flickr photos from you, your friends and some important international news agencies. It can be a little tricky to set up but it's a lot of fun to use.

If you're coocoo for cocoa puffs over these kinds of tools in general, check out this long, long list of Flickr tools from QuickOnlineTips.com.

How do You Like to Use Flickr?

These are some of our favorite tips for using Flickr but we're sure many of our readers can suggest even more. Flickr is a canonical service in the Web 2.0 world. It's really worth spending some more time with. With less time than it took you to read this whole article, we think you can set up some systems that will make Flickr a much more enjoyable part of your life.

Three tips for “company blogging”

This is my personal blog. I don’t run my draft posts by Google’s PR or legal team, other than maybe 2-3 times when I thought a post might have legal implications. But I have learned a few hard-won lessons. So, when someone recently asked me for tips about talking to the public, I couldn’t resist. Whether you blog for the company officially or unofficially, here are my top three rules of thumb:

Don’t make hard promises about the future. One of the beauties of web-based software and services is you get to decide when to push out changes. Don’t give up that freedom by promising a feature to the outside world by a certain deadline. Maybe later you’ll decide that a different feature is a bigger win. Or you may want to hold off for a week to polish down the last rough edges on a product.

Don’t trash talk a competitor. Your product should be strong enough that you don’t have to diss a competing company. Back in 2002, an article in the Boston Herald showed up about another search engine. The article claimed that “The entire XXXXXXXXX Catalog is updated every 9 to 11 days.” I knew for a fact that wasn’t true and at first I wanted to rip that claim to shreds like a bulldog. But (with the advice of some wiser Googlers), I decided to take the high road instead of picking a fight. In fact, claims like that motivated Google to be fresher and faster. Now I believe Google has the freshest index of any of the major web search engines.

Sometimes other companies will throw dirt in your direction. In that case, the challenge is to correct any misperceptions without picking a fight. But first ask yourself: do you really need to respond at all? If not, then maybe it’s better not to get pulled into an argument where everyone involved loses a little credibility. So far I’ve written 10-15 draft posts (and who knows how many I’ve written in my head) where I was snarky about another search engine, and then not published the post. Each time when I look back after a few months, I’m glad that I didn’t post.

Don’t post when you’re angry. This is probably the most important tip. If you have to write something, go ahead, but don’t press publish until you’ve slept on the situation or had a chance to calm down completely.

I’ve broken each of these rules, and regretted it almost every time. What tips would you suggest when blogging about your company?

In today’s fast paced world, applying for a business credit card can be downright confusing particularly when there are many cards to choose from. With the amount of choice out there today, it can be easy to get discouraged. But before you can actually own a plastic, one must evaluate oneself if one is qualified to own one.

Not everyone can pay the promised amount of debt when your due comes. Most especially when you encounter a financial crisis and it is the least of your worries. If you rarely missed your due date and the payment is made as soon as the lapse is noticed then creditors will fail to notice such slip.

For a couple of months now, Chandler Hub has supported the ability to sync all of your Chandler data (not just events) onto other iCalendar or CalDAV to applications and tasks.

Chandler notes (starred or plain) should now show up in other iCalendar or CalDAV calendar applications (e.g. Apple iCal, and Lightning) as Tasks (VTODOS).

Here are instructions on how to subscribe to Chandler collections from other calendar applications. (Unfortunately, some Chandler-specific will be lost. e.g. NOW and LATER triage status will both be interpreted as “Not-Done”. Anytime events will look the same as All-day events.)

I also demo this in the second half of the new 3-Minute Feature Tour. Also available (lo-res) on YouTube.

Has anyone made use of this feature yet?

[HoneyMonitor is a MySQL? GUI Tool for Windows? Systems. Server Administration, Database and Database Objects Administration, Code Development, Server Monitoring, Performance Monitoring, Performance Auditing. Read more on http://www.honeysoftware.com/]

This is a short tutorial on the features implemented in HoneyMonitor for the use and administration of Plugins. It could be useful for Users who are new to the product and want to get start with it or to whom want to learn the basis of Plugins in MySQL? 5.1

More details on the HoneyMonitor Reference Manual at http://www.honeysoftware.com/honeymonitor/doc.

Contents

Introduction

Plugins Metadata

Retrieving the list of Plugins

The Plugins Editor

The Plugins Tab of the Server Properties Window

An example of use: a FULLTEXT parser plugin

Other Resources

1. Introduction

There are three ways to add new functions to the MySQL? Server:

through the User-Defined Function (UDF) interface;

by creating Stored Functions;

starting from v.5.1, through the MySQL? Plugin Interface (the plugin interface is intended as the successor to the older UDF interface; in some respects, the plugin API is similar to the older UDF API that it supersedes, but the plugin API has several advantages over the older interface).

The UDFs are compiled as object files (.dll, .so) and then added to and removed from the server dynamically.
The Stored Functions are written using SQL statements rather than by compiling object code.
The Plugins are compiled as object files (.dll, .so) and then installed to and uninstalled from the server dynamically.

For more information about Plugins, please visit http://dev.mysql.com/doc/refman/5.1/en/plugin-api.html.

2. Plugins Metadata

In the mysql database there is a table - mysql.plugin ? where all the information about your Plugins are stored:

mysql> DESCRIBE mysql.plugin;
+——-+———–+——+—–+———+——-+
| Field | Type | Null | Key | Default | Extra |
+——-+———–+——+—–+———+——-+
| name | char(64) | NO | PRI | | |
| dl | char(128) | NO | | | |
+——-+———–+——+—–+———+——-+
2 rows in set (0.01 sec)

3. Retrieving the list of Plugins

Plugins are listed in Plugins node of the Server Objects List (Fig. 1).

Fig. 1: Server Objects List - Plugins

You can install / uninstall a Plugin using node’s popup menu.

4. The Plugins Editor

The Plugins Editor (Fig. 2), allows you to install a Plugin. To successfully install a Plugin, you must copy it in the Plugin Directory of the Server (the Editor helps you because it includes a specific field for the Plugin Directory ? not editable, of course).

Fig. 2: The Plugins Editor

Let’s install a plugin using the Plugin Editor.

For this tutorial I will use the ?Simple N-Gram (bi-gram) FULLTEXT parser plugin for MySQL 5.1+? - http://mysqlbigram.googlepages.com/.

We will connect to a MySQL? Server running on a Linux Machine (Ubuntu) through a SSH Connection.

open the Plugins Editor and read your Plugin Directory

download the plugin library to the Plugin Directory (or ask your system administration to do that) ? Fig. 3

Fig. 3: Getting the Plugin

insert the ?Plugin Name? and the ?Library Name? in the Plugin Editor and click on the save button (Fig. 2)

After the installation of the Plugin, the SQL Tab (Fig. 4) ? now enabled - will contain the SQL syntax for re-installing the current Plugin.

Fig. 4: The Plugin Editor - SQL Tab

Note: you can open the ?Server Properties Window? to read the value of the variable plugin_dir (Fig. 5).

Fig. 5: Server Properties Window - Variables Tab

5. The Plugins Tab of the Server Properties Window

In the ?Server Properties Window? there is a Tab for Plugins’ management. As you can see from Fig. 6

Fig. 6: Server Properties Window - Plugins Tab

in the Server Objects List are listed only your plugins while in the Plugins’ Tab of the Server Properties Windows the ?system? plugins are listed too. The 2 Windows use different queries:

Welcome to the MySQL monitor. Commands end with ; or \g.
Your MySQL connection id is 23
Server version: 5.1.26-rc MySQL Community Server (GPL)

Type ‘help;’ or ‘\h’ for help. Type ‘\c’ to clear the buffer.

mysql> SELECT `name` FROM `mysql`.`plugin`; #### The Server Objects List

6. An example of use: a FULLTEXT parser plugin

Our plugin has been installed and it’s ready for use. Let’s test the ‘WITH PARSER’ option of the INDEX syntax:

First we create a Table ? using the command line client or the Create Table Wizard (Fig. 7)

mysql> USE test;
Database changed
mysql> CREATE TABLE t (c VARCHAR(255));
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.01 sec)

Fig. 7: Create Table Wizard

And then we add an Index, using the command line or the Index Editor (Fig. 8)

mysql> CREATE FULLTEXT INDEX c ON t(c) WITH PARSER bi_gram;
Query OK, 0 rows affected (0.01 sec)
Records: 0 Duplicates: 0 Warnings: 0

Fig. 8: Index Editor

Of course we can add the Index while we are creating the table, but for this tutorial I decided to to that in two steps to let you see the CREATE INDEX syntax.

Bookmarklets are very handy pieces of JavaScript code that you can bookmark. In HTML, if you want a link to open in a new window, you’d write it like this:

<a href=”http://www.mattcutts.com/blog/” target=”_blank”>Matt Cutts</a>

Go on, try it on this link: Matt Cutts

If you wanted to create a bookmarklet to open a new window or tab, you’d do it like this:

javascript:(function(){ window.open(’http://www.cnn.com/’); })();

so the actual bookmarklet link that would appear in your HTML as

<a href=”javascript:(function(){ window.open(’http://www.cnn.com/’); })();”>CNN</a>

and if you want to play with it, here’s the trivial CNN example bookmarklet. On Firefox, you can drag the bookmarklet to your bookmarks bar. On Internet Explorer, you can right-click and select “Add to Favorites...”.

The reason I mention this is that bit.ly is a url shortening service that I like, and they have a bookmarklet, but it replaces the page that you’re shortening. Their bookmarklet looks like this:

javascript:location.href=’http://bit.ly/?url=’+encodeURIComponent(location.href)

So suppose you find a new page that you want to twitter about or shorten the url for some reason. You want a bookmarklet that opens the bit.ly url in a new window or tab instead of replacing the current page. Combining the two bookmarkets, you’d get

javascript:(function(){ window.open(’http://bit.ly/?url=’+encodeURIComponent(location.href)); })();

and here is a bookmarklet for bit.ly that opens your bit.ly url in a new window or tab. You can just drag the bookmarklet to your bookmarks folder.

That’s enough to get you started with bookmarklets, but you can find more info about bookmarklets by searching or by looking at example bookmarklets around the web. For example, industrial-strength bookmarklets often load JavaScript dynamically from a webserver. That way if you want to upgrade or improve the functionality of the bookmarklet, you can change the code on the webserver instead of asking every user to update their bookmark. On the other end of the spectrum, some quick-and-dirty bookmarklets don’t even bother escaping the url.

I want to open a new tab, not a new window!

Some webmasters want to choose between a link opening a new tab vs. a new window. I believe that you don’t get that choice -- it’s up to the user and their web browser. For example, in Firefox a user can select their desired behavior under Tools → Options → Tabs → “New pages should be opened in:” and choose “a new tab”. Or to tweak the setting directly, the user can type “about:config” into the location bar/address bar and then modify the “browser.link.open_newwindow” option to be one of the following values:

1 = open new windows in the existing window
2 = open new windows in a new window
3 = open new windows in a new tab (this is the default in Firefox 2 and Firefox 3)

See this about:config page for more info.

Likewise in Internet Explorer, the user can go into Tools → Internet Options → “Settings” button in the Tabs section and then under “When a pop-up is encountered:” choose “Always open pop-ups in a new tab”.

David Read uses Chandler to share calendars with his family

Recently, a new user wrote in to the Users List asking if Chandler would be useful for maintaining Family calendars.

David Read responded that he was using Chandler in exactly that way:

Liz,

My family uses Chandler just the way you are describing. Each individual has a calendar and Chandler makes it easy to view each as part of a unified schedule.

The big win for me is that whether I’m home, at work or out of town, I have a way to check upcoming events to be sure I don’t schedule something in conflict (like missing a Parent-Teacher conference).

My mother and in-laws are also local and they love having a way to see upcoming events like the grandchildren’s concerts and dance recitals.

Prior to Chandler (we’ve been using it for over a year now) we maintained a paper-based calendar (really the school calendar with our notes). I can’t imagine going back to that.

Regards,

-Dave

Note: Not Real Data

Later sort improved

I’m one of those people who uses their email inbox as
a task list. I keep emails around forever if I think there’s
something I need to do associated with that email. I file messages I
think I might refer to one day out of my inbox. Unfortunately, this
approach sometimes means I have a lot of email threads all clamoring
for my attention. It can be overwhelming.

One of Chandler’s appeals for me is the ability to manage lots of
different ideas, but only focus on a few at a time. The way focus
works in Chandler is that items are “triaged” to NOW, LATER, or DONE.

DONE is just like filing an email. NOW is like leaving the
email in my inbox. The big enhancement, for me, is LATER.

With the LATER section, you can mark a message as important to pay
attention to, but not right now. This risks becoming a gargantuan pit
of “someday, maybe” items, though, so you can also assign an alarm,
and that item will pop back to NOW in the future.

Now I can choose just a few things to keep in my NOW section, and
collapse the LATER and DONE sections so they don’t distract me.

One big problem with the LATER section, until recently, was that it
was sorted pretty arbitrarily. I have dozens of LATER items.
Birthdays, events months from now, reminders to do something next
month, and more. What I (and most users, from what we’ve heard on our
mailing lists) want is for the LATER section to sort according to
when an item will become NOW again.

I’m happy to announce that in our latest release (1.0rc1), the LATER
section sorts appropriately! For all you non-Chandler users reading
this, that may not seem like a big deal. But it has a surprisingly
big impact on my use of Chandler.

When LATER sorted arbitrarily, I spent a lot of my time going and looking at my calendar to
remind myself if I had upcoming events. Really, I don’t have enough
events to want a calendar view very often. Mostly, I just want to
know what’s coming soon. Now the LATER section gives me that.

I used to not bother assigning alarms to events. I’m not sure why, it
just felt like too much effort for not enough payoff. Being able to
see a prioritized-by-date list of LATER items pushes the
effort-to-payoff ratio to a point where I’m always assigning alarms to
anything I don’t want to think about right now. As a result, my NOW
section is much more manageable and I’m calmer about what I need to be
thinking about.

Keith Winsor uses Chandler with Microsoft One Note

Keith recently wrote into the users list about how he uses Microsoft OneNote with Chandler and how he’d love it if the new clickable URLs feature worked for OneNote links as well. (Emphasis, mine.)

As I posted in my user story, I am hopelessly disorganised. I have a theory that if I buy enough plastic boxes, I’ll attain the miraculous state of ‘in control’. Bits of paper containing ‘notes to self’ used to be found months after they’d been written, by which time it was too late to do anything with them.

OneNote has become my one piece of paper. On my tablet PC, I can hand write notes as I’m on the phone to customers. I can use it creatively for something like mind mapping - free-form, different colours, engage both sides of the brain. I can print web pages to it, embed photos and web clippings, possible solutions to problems - anything relating to anything, and all shared between whichever machines I’m using at the time.

Chandler provides diary and task management capabilities, shared between myself and my wife. I tend to use OneNote for the ‘capture’ phase and for organising my thoughts, then Chandler manages the next actions, appointments, and reminders.

Typically, I create a list of actions in OneNote, hit a hot key in AutoHotKey and the selected action will be copied to clipboard and pasted to a new task in Chandler.

One feature of OneNote is a right-click “copy this page’s URL to clipboard” and I’m envisaging modifying my script to create a task in Chandler and then paste the URL of the OneNote page into Chandler’s notes field, providing a one-click link back to the original OneNote page. Also, I’m looking at an AutoHotKey script to copy a task in OneNote and paste it into Chandler’s search box, so that I’ve got a kludgey but fairly seamless each way link between items.

So nothing too complicated, just a quick means of linking items in each app to each other.

Note To make it so that Chandler recognizes OneNote URLs, you must first apply this patch. However, if enough OneNote users pipe up with feedback that this would be very useful, we will up the priority on making it so OneNote URLs work by default.

Note: Not real data.

Keep track of files in Chandler

We recently released an early version of 1.0 which includes new support for clickable URLs in the notes field.

I’ve mostly been thinking of URLs in terms of web URLs, but a couple of users have been testing out the new URL functionality with file system links. Chandler can recognize URLs for files, folders, and applications.

So in addition to web URLs, you can also keep track of documents you’re working on with triage status, tickler alarms and the calendar.

Use Google Calendar to get daily agenda emails for Chandler collection

I’ve been working on a Chandler Server feature that allows users to setup and receive a daily/weekly agenda via email that would include upcoming items for the day/week and also a list of items with a triage status of NOW. While this work isn’t done, I’ve discovered a way to get a daily agenda for a collection shared on Chandler Hub using Google Calendar. So in the mean time if you want an easy way to get a daily agenda via email (or SMS) you can do the following:

Log in to Chandler Hub and open collection details for collection you want to receive notifications for (click on down arrow next to collection name in collection list):

If it hasn’t been done already, click [Invite] to generate sharing links.

Right-click or Cmd-Click (Mac) on either one of the [Invite] link to Copy Link. (Note Collections you subscribed to will only display 1 “Invite” link, the link you used to subscribe.)

Log in to your Google Calendar account

In your calendar list, click on [Add] pulldown and select Add by URL

Paste the URL obtained in step 2 into Public Calendar Address field, changing “pim” to “webcal”. The URL should look something like: https://hub.chandlerproject.org/pim/collection/215715b0-5a0b-11dd-92a1-e12efc62301d?ticket=26htadc0

Click [Add]

In the calendar list, click on the down arrow and select Notifications

Setup daily agenda email or SMS

You are done! Google Calendar will automatically refresh the URL every few hours and will send a daily agenda to you at 5am every morning.

Of course there are some limitations. The email will go to your gmail account, the agenda only includes events, there is a possibility of data being out of date, there is no triage status information, and no way to link back to the original items on Chandler Hub.
