MySpace And HP Team Up To Help You Print Out Those Drunken Photos

MySpace has partnered with computer giant Hewlett-Packard to introduce a number of new print options to the popular social networking site. Beginning in November, users will be able to click an HP-branded “Print” box embedded on their MySpace pages to access a printer-friendly version of any portion of their profile that can be printed from their home printer. The announcement was made today by MySpace co-founder and CEO Chris DeWolfe and HP EVP of Imaging and Printing Vyomesh Joshi at HP’s Imaging and Printing Conference in San Diego.

It seems a little excessive - I can’t imagine wanting to print out anyone’s MySpace profile, and running promotions to print across the entire site isn’t very green either. I wonder if MySpace’s official Green site Our Planet will include the Print widget, too.

That said, I’m sure many users will be happy to have an easy way to print their photos from MySpace (which reportedly now has over 4 billion images). I can’t say I’ve ever had much desire to print a photo directly off a social network - I’ll usually just copy and paste the ones I like into iPhoto. But many users have been (and will continue to) print photos off the site, and will welcome the new feature. MySpace and HP say they also hope to eventually give users the ability to print to merchandise like mugs and other items, which may give them added incentive to use the service.

But really, who even prints photos (or Email) anymore?

HP Planning Consumer-centered QWERTY Smartphone

In a departure from HP's original iPaq smartphone mission, the company is planning a consumer-oriented smartphone that may or may not be the slider-QWERTY phone codenamed "Oak." Greg at MobileCrunch writes:

Back in January, word got out of a new WinMo 6.1 touchscreen handset floating around the Hewlett Packard labs. Called the Oak and tentatively set for a September launch on Vodafone, it had a number pad on its face and a slide-out QWERTY keyboard packed away underneath. Unfortunately, all's been mum on the matter since the initial leak. September came and went, and the Oak didn't make an appearance.

Current consumer smartphones like the Palm Centro and the T-Mobile Wing are selling well and adding higher-end functions to lower-end phones seems to be the trend, especially considering the coming rise of Android. But can HP sell outside of the IT departments that traditionally bought its PDAs and smartphones?

HP on Wednesday announced that it will acquire LeftHand Networks, a company focusing on iSCSI SAN technology, for $360 million in an attempt to bolster its virtualization services for the enterprise.

HP believes that the LeftHand acquisition will help it attract more midsized organizations that are trying desperately to keep storage costs down as their needs continue to climb.

The acquisition will be finalized during the first quarter of 2009, at which time LeftHand Networks will be integrated into HP’s StorageWorks division.

Building a Blade Server: The HP Factory Tour

Last Friday, not only did I get a first look at HP’s containerized data center, but I was given a tour of its factory floors in Houston, where HP makes high-value custom servers for clients. One factory makes the servers, while the other assembles the computers into racks and complete systems. The systems can contain any combination of gear that a client could want, including servers from rival hardware vendors. (photos after the jump)

The factories are roughly 140,000 square feet each and employ about 1,600 people working around the clock, five days a week. HP keeps enough material on hand to keep the plant going for 12-16 hours without new inputs from vendors with warehouses in the Houston area. Each day they use about 3,000 chips worth some $3 million. The chips arrive twice a day in an armored lock box accompanied by guards. The photos below document all the steps involved, from gathering the boards and chips to the shipping of individual servers, with a quick shot of an HP system being built. I wanted to get a shot of the lock box of chips, but was denied.

Brute Force with Brains.
Here is a brief overview of the Oracle Exadata Storage Server key performance attributes:

Intelligent Storage. Ship less data due to query intelligence in the storage.
Bigger Pipes. Infiniband with Remote Direct Memory Access. 5x Faster than Fibre Channel.
More Pipes. Scalable, redundant I/O Fabric.

Yes, it’s called Oracle Exadata Storage Server and it really was [...]

Exclusive: First Look Inside the HP POD Data Centers

I traveled down to Houston today to check out a data center geek’s version of paradise — the inside of the factory where HP builds their rack-mounted servers and high-value blade systems. I shot plenty of photos that show how a bunch of chips and boards gets assembled into a blade that I will put in a later post, but I also got to take a tour of the inside of HP’s containerized data center, known as a POD. “Tour” isn’t really the right word, since it’s hard to move around inside the 40-foot shipping container filled with racks, but it was pretty sweet to see all that processing power in one place.

I’ve embedded a three-minute video below with Wade Vinson, a thermal engineer with HP, and pasted a few photos of the outside of the factory. HP isn’t the only company filling shipping containers full of servers to save power and space; Sun Microsystems and Rackable are doing it as well. And IBM and Dell have indicated that they plan to get into the market as companies seek to place computing in remote locations or build out their data centers rapidly.

I found this article in a art blog. Interesting to think about people's thought on new technologies, as they are made for our comodity, they also install a sense of fear and danger in our minds. "It is hard to think of a technology that wasn't feared when it was introduced. The pessimistic assumption that new technologies will somehow make our lives worse may be a function of occupation or training."

vondiggity writes to tell us that HP is working on several different ways to make an end run around Vista. Among the plans is also a supposed rumor that certain factions within HP are developing their own flavor of Linux. Executives at HP deny that any meaningful amount of resources are being directed into plans for a mass-market operating system, stating their main goal is to innovate on top of Vista. "Still, the sources say employees in HP's PC division are exploring the possibility of building a mass-market operating system. HP's software would be based on Linux, the open-source operating system that is already widely available, but it would be simpler and easier for mainstream users, the sources say. The goal may be to make HP less dependent on Windows and to strengthen HP's hand against Apple (AAPL), which has gained market share in recent years by offering easy-to-use computers with its own operating system."

Read more of this story at Slashdot.
