10 Things to Know and Hate About Metered Broadband

Since we’re getting in a huff over Comcast’s 250 GB cap, we thought it would be helpful to lay out why capping broadband is a bad idea today and a worse one for tomorrow, how it can benefit ISPs, and why it’s not really necessary on most networks. Check out our handy overview and links to our past coverage on the topic.

Time Warner got the ball rolling back in January, and in June it announced a trial limiting folks to tiers from 5 GB per month to 40 GB per month. Billing began this month.

While some of the telcos have threatened caps, only Frontier has actually done so across its service area with a minuscule 5 GB limit.

Yesterday Comcast clarified that it will implement a per-month cap of 250 GB, but defended it by noting that it will affect less than 1 percent of its users and most users download 2-3 GB per month.

Many of these caps have been imposed in the name of network management, but they have financial benefits for ISPs as well.

There are differences between the last-mile networks of telco and cable providers that make broadband caps more useful for cable networks, but it’s still a bad idea.

A 250 GB cap won’t affect many people today, but anything making people think twice about delivering or downloading broadband services could have a negative impact on innovation.

In the case of delivering Olympic coverage online, lower-level caps may already be having an effect, but it’s hard to tell without software to track usage.

That means it could hurt companies such as Google, Amazon.com and Netflix as they roll out higher-bandwidth using services.

And in the future, services ranging from telemedicine to teleconferencing could feel the impact. Not to mention those poor web workers.

But regardless of what a few carriers in the U.S. are doing with caps, the web will continue to grow, both in terms of the number of users and the amount of data they consume. Caps won’t stop it, and neither will network management measures such as traffic throttling. If our broadband networks can’t meet that demand, the U.S. eventually could find itself lagging in the technology field.

Network Bridge comes in handy. Its essentially the same as ICS, only more flexible, albeit less secure. You might want to have a firewall remain on your system with it.

Normally, using a series of commands will work when bridge-utils is installed, but they're only for the current session. We want to make it permanent.

Procedure to follow

1. Get bridge-utils through Synaptic. This is the software we'll use to create the Network Bridge.

sudo aptitude install bridge-utils

Now, keep in mind to either print this out or not exit your browser, because in this next step we'll stop the Networking Services to change them.

2. Open a terminal, and type

sudo /etc/init.d/networking stop

Keep the terminal open.

3. Now we're going to edit our interfaces file:

gksu gedit /etc/network/interfaces

Replace whatever is there with:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet manual

auto eth1
iface eth1 inet manual

auto br0
iface br0 inet dhcp
bridge_ports eth0 eth1

Save the changes.

4. Now we'll restart the Network Services

sudo /etc/init.d/networking start

And there we go. Your computer is now set up to automatically share its internet connection without dizzying settings for more advanced set-ups!

Have fun, and note longer boot-ups will occur due to creating the network upon boot.

            <doap:name>cush</doap:name>

Cloud User Shell (cush) is a multi-call executable (like BusyBox) that combines many useful cloud computing utilities into a single utility, bringing cushy, RESTful cloud control to the command line.

It follows Unix principles, seamlessly blending cloud resources into existing working environments. In addition to bringing basic HTTP verbs (get, put, post, delete) to the shell, it allows URLs to be ‘dereferenced’ and software pipelines of server side software to be created.

Most people will create a link to cush for each function they wish to use and cush will act like whatever it was invoked as, but it can also be called directly and passed the command as the first parameter.

Cloud-computing

            <doap:name>Cloud-computing</doap:name>

Cloud computing means Internet (‘Cloud’) based development and use of computer technology (‘Computing’). It is a style of computing where IT-related capabilities are provided “as a service”, allowing users to access technology-enabled services “in the cloud” without knowledge of, expertise with, or control over the technology infrastructure that supports them. It is a general concept that incorporates software as a service, Web 2.0 and other recent, well-known technology trends, where the common theme is reliance on the Internet for satisfying the computing needs of the users. For example, Google Apps provides common business applications online that are accessed from a web browser, while the software and data is stored on the servers.

Cloud computing is often confused with grid computing (a form of distributed computing whereby a “super and virtual computer” is composed of a cluster of networked, loosely-coupled computers, acting in concert to perform very large tasks), utility computing (the packaging of computing resources, such as computation and storage, as a metered service similar to a traditional public utility such as electricity) and autonomic computing (computer systems capable of self-management). Indeed many cloud computing deployments are today powered by grids, have autonomic characteristics and are billed like utilities, but cloud computing is rather a natural next step from the grid-utility model. Some successful cloud architectures have little or no centralised infrastructure or billing systems whatsoever including Peer to peer networks like BitTorrent and Skype and Volunteer computing like SETI@home.

The majority of cloud computing infrastructure currently consists of reliable services delivered through next-generation data centers that are built on compute and storage virtualization technologies. The services are accessible anywhere in the world, with The Cloud appearing as a single point of access for all the computing needs of consumers. Commercial offerings need to meet the quality of service requirements of customers and typically offer service level agreements. Open standards and open source software are also critical to the growth of cloud computing.

As customers generally do not own the infrastructure, they are merely accessing or renting, they can forego capital expenditure and consume resources as a service, paying instead for what they use. Many cloud computing offerings have adopted the utility computing model which is analogous to how traditional utilities like electricity are consumed, while others are billed on a subscription basis. By sharing “perishable and intangible” computing power between multiple tenants, utilization rates can be improved (as servers are not left idle) which can reduce costs significantly while increasing the speed of application development. A side effect of this approach is that “computer capacity rises dramatically” as customers do not have to engineer for peak loads8. Adoption has been enabled by “increased high-speed bandwidth” which makes it possible to receive the same response times from centralized infrastructure at other sites.

The cloud computing “revolution” is being driven by companies like Amazon, Google, Salesforce and Yahoo! as well as traditional vendors including Hewlett Packard, IBM, Intel and Microsoft and adopted by individuals through large enterprises including General Electric, L’Oréal, Procter & Gamble and Valeo.
