The iTunes App Store is becoming a trendsetter for other companies in the mobile market. With thousands of apps to choose from and over 60 million downloads total, what more could you ask for? Apparently a lot. Users still aren't satisfied with the selection of apps that Apple is letting into the App Store. Apps that are extending the functionality of some of Apple's standard offerings are being denied their chance to shine. This has resulted in a small, but talented pool of developers finding other ways to promote their apps to iPhone users.

Pushr

There just aren't enough dedicated Flickr apps in the iTunes App Store. To add injury to insult, the majority of dedicated Flickr apps don't allow you to upload Flickr photos from your iPhone. Users can edit the name, description, tags, and privacy options before uploading it their Flickr account. We're huge fans of its tagging feature because it pulls from the list of previously used tags for better convenience.

Qik is one of the best livestreaming services available on the web. The service has recently expand its offerings of compatible handsets. Lucky for jailbreakers, Qik has recently become available on jailbroken iPhones. Since its initial release the Qik app has upgraded tremendously. You can now:

Send an alert to Twitter

Set stream title
Allow Qik to see your current location

It's still recommended to livestream with Qik over Wifi or 3G connections. Though, that's hardly something to complain about.

Flixwagon

If you're not into Qik, you may like its competitor, Flixwagon. Most of what applies to the Qik app also applies to the Flixwagon application. So we won't bore you with a rehash of the details.If you're on Flixwagon instead of Qik, you won't be left out in the cold. If only these apps were available in the App Store...

Winterboard

If you're a customization junkie like some of us here on ReadWriteWeb, then you were probably disappointed in the fact that there's very little you can do in terms of customizing the iPhone. The only customization option is the changing of the lock-screen wallpaper. Honestly, who even pays attention to that?

It stays out of the way and works really well with the iPod app.

Cycorder

When Qik became available for the iPhone, we noted how you could use Qik as a video recorder for your iPhone. Those tips aren't obsolete, but Cycorder is a better option. Cycorder has great video recording quality ranging between 6-15 fps. We've been tipped off that for better recording quality with this app, you'll need to be in a will lit area. You can playback your videos on your iPhone or simply download them to your computer for maximum viewing pleasure. Someone tell us why this isn't in the App Store?

More to Come

The only hindrance with these apps is that you have to jailbreak your iPhone in order to get them. We really wish we didn't. The process for jailbreaking your iPhone can be pretty confusing on the first go round. However, it's relatively safe enough that if anything goes wrong you can restore your iPhone using iTunes.

The number of jailbroken apps available is tremendous, but doesn't rival the number of App Store offerings. In terms of quality apps with consistent updates, we'd rather go with jailbroken repositories Cydia and Installer 4. We're sure there are plenty more apps to look forward to like SwirlyMMS, which will make it easier for iPhone users to send MMS messages. We'll keep you posted as they come down the pipeline.

Summer of Code Roundup

The Google Summer of Code for 2008 has officially ended now and we're happy to report that five of our six students have successfully completed their projects.

Congratulations to Aman, Bill, Jared, Matt, and Sami. Good work, guys!

Of course, this being software development, not everything worked out quite as planned and some plans had to be revised along the way. Still, we got some great results and so future Geeklog versions will, among other things, get a comment moderation queue, plugin installation through uploads, and a revamped search results page. And we'll try to get these new features integrated a little faster this time around ;-)

In the meantime, if you're feeling adventurous and want to play around with the new features, we've set up a GSoC repository using Mercurial that our students used to commit their code to. Be warned that things may be a little rough around the edges still. And most importantly: This special GSoC version is a dead end - we will be porting things over to the Geeklog mainline from there. But for playing around on a test install and to get a feel of what's coming, it's fine.

Next up: Geeklog 1.5.1, a bugfix release for Geeklog 1.5.0. And don't forget that you can help us with the planning of future versions by taking part in our current poll.

Howto Dump and view the cache of BIND9 DNS server

Bind 9 makes it fairly easy to dump and view the cache of a caching BIND DNS server. All you have to do is run under root:

rndc dumpdb -cache

This will create a file called named_dump.db in the /var/cache/bind/ directory. You can easily open this .db with your favorite text editor.

** If your instance of BIND is chrooted, for example to /var/lib/named/, then the cache dump file will be located in the /var/lib/named/var/cache/bind/ directory.

** The dumpdb feature of rndc has other options including a -all or -zone flag. Check 'rndc --help' for more information.

Disable the Multiple Instances of VLC , Follow these Steps

1. Open up the Terminal , and type :

gedit vlc.sh

This will open a new blank file , inside the file , copy and paste the following :

#!/bin/sh

#Script to Disable Multiple Instances of VLC Media Player.

pid=$(pidof vlc)

kill -9 $pid

vlc "$1"

Save the File and Close it.

2.Make Script Executable.
In the terminal , do :

chmod a+x ~/vlc.sh

3.Change File Associations.

Right Click a .mp3 file , go to Properties.
Now click the "Open With" tab.
Click Add.
Click "Add a Custom Command".
Click Browse and select the vlc.sh
(Its the file u just created in your home directory in Step 1.)
Click Add.
Click Close.

**Do This For all the Extensions you want to Run using VLC , For example ,AVI ,M3U , MPEG , etc **

Now Whenever u new file , VLC will close if its running and play the new item.

**If you do Not like it , and want to Revert for reasons unknown :P **

Just Change the File Associations
(the one u changed to vlc.sh in Step 3. back to VLC Media Player)

Delete the vlc.sh file (It will be in the ~ Folder).

Optional (Opening files via Browsers Directly) :

The file associations part works great with regard to browsing and double clicking files in Nautilus, on the desktop, or whatever. But if you want to add this function in Firefox , Seamonkey , etc., you will want to set up the file associations in your browser as well.

In Firefox, you would go to Preferences->Applications, find and highlight the file type, scroll down to "use other...", browse to your ~/vlc.sh file, click "Open", move onto the next file type, next, next, ..., and then close your Firefox preferences.

Google Chrome Hacks Blog was launched today.

We had to settle on Chrome-hacks.net although we wanted to get Chromehacks.com.

We will be doing a lot of posts on the latest tips, hacks, and other news just for the Google Chrome browser so make sure to subscribe to RSS feed.

For the mother of God and for whatever reason, we just launched another new blog, of course it’s called Google Chrome Hacks Blog.

Basically, the blog will cover all kinds of tips, hacks, and news about the new Google Chrome Browser.

It took us exactly 2 hours to sign up for a domain name at godaddy, stuff it with Wordpress plugins and themes, write 5 blog posts. (Not too bad of a start ey?)

Hulu Bad For the Net, Video Still Not Clogging It

Hulu is a problem. So argues a paper by University of Minnesota Professor Dr. Andrew Odlyzko, who says that video isn’t actually clogging the Net right now, but that streaming video content is such an inefficient way of getting video from one place to another that sites should find better options, such as faster-than-real-time streaming and buffering. The goal of the paper is to counter carrier assurances that they will protect video even without any mandated Network Neutrality. Odlyzko argues that such assurances might lead to special video pathways, but that’s not the Internet the market wants and needs.

Aside from Odlyzko’s attack on streaming, which he says comprises 9.6 percent of total web traffic during evening hours and has grown 169 percent year over year, the largest part of the paper is devoted to data that supports his conclusions that content, such as Internet radio and video, is worth less than connectivity such as voice or Twitter. People don’t pay for content, they pay for connectivity, says Odlyzko.

For all the hoopla about Hollywood, all the movie theater ticket sales and all the DVD
sales in the U.S. for a full year do not come amount [sic] to even one month of the revenuesof the telecom industry. And those telecom revenues are still over 70% based on voice,
deﬁnitely a connectivity service. In wireless, there is very rapid growth in data service
revenues, but most of those revenues are from texting, another connectivity service (and
one that the industry did not design, but stumbled into).

The report makes for good reading for those thinking about the value of broadband connections (from a revenue perspective a text message generates $1,000 per MB for a carrier while a wireless voice call generates $1 per MB and broadband Internet generates 1 cent per MB) and next-generation services. But if people will pay for connectivity, why can’t Twitter find a business model?

The Cabbage Chair is like peeling onions. Well, so long as you don’t have onion smell this chair does look pretty functional and what if they made Cabbage Lounge Sofas? That’d be way too cool.

Above is a series of snapshots of how the Cabbage Chair becomes a chair after being shipped to a customer. From the point of view of an ecoist, the Cabbage Chair does reduce carbon footprint by being able to ship itself in the smallest shape possible. This reminds me of Keetsa Eco-Friendly Mattresses where the mattresses are compressed into a box before shipping.

The chair has no internal structure, no screws or nails, and could be eventually produced so that it gets shipped as one easy roll for the customer to peel back and use at home. I don’t recommend buying useless stuff like these, but I’ve posted about this chair to see what other people from around the world think, and create.

After money went missing at the home of terminally ill grandmother, the 21 year old daughter set up a DIY homemade Teddy Bear cam to catch the caregiver stealing money.

We say the care-giver is a heartless and worthless soul who needs to really clean her soul.

Robert Sampson, 46, and Emma, 21, fixed the tiny camera in the Liverpool home of his mother Thelma Sampson, 75.

Last week, care assistant Yvonne Allen, 28, of Halewood, Liverpool, was sentenced to six months in prison after pleading guilty to two counts of theft.

Mr Sampson said his mother, who has cancer, was pleased about the sentence.

Mr Sampson and his daughter, who has just graduated from the University of Central Lancashire, set up the camera when Mrs Sampson noticed money going missing from her purse at her home in Walton.

Here’s a funny video proving that Fortune Cookies are in fact, from America itself. It’s funny but maybe Fortune Cookies were invented by the Chinese Americans to lure more customers. Go to China, they don’t even know what a Fortune Cookie is.

But I can understand that, they have Chinese food in Korea that they don’t have in America, it’s called Korean-Chinese food. Fortune Cookies are definitely American-Chinese food, speaking of which, there’s all these non-authentic Chinese food chains popping up. (and yes, they taste horrible to an authentic Asian mouth.)

Clearly not. They are arguably more American (by way of Japan), judging by the way that people in China react to fortune cookies — with a mixture of confusion and amusement. As part of research for my book, The Fortune Cookie Chronicles, I went around China handing out fortune cookies to random people (my bellhop, people on the street, vendors) and recorded their reactions.

Often times, they would put the cookies in their mouth, and then be surprised when they found a piece of paper either in their mouth or in a cookie.

MySQL 5.1 Use Case Competition ? until end of September!

We timed our Use Case Competition to coincide with summer holidays, and are now prolonging the duration of the Use Case Competition with one month, until 30 September 2008.

To recap, here’s the original posting (with an updated deadline):

With 5.1 having officially been in Release Candidate status since September 2007 and soon approaching GA status, the MySQL Community Team launches a competition for the users of new features of MySQL 5.1:

Submit your MySQL 5.1 Use Case Report to community(at)mysql.com by 30 September 2008 and have a chance of winning one of our prizes:

1st-3rd prize: A MySQL Conference & Expo 2009 Pass, including a dinner with MySQL co-founder Michael “Monty” Widenius

4th-10th prize: MySQL Community Contributor T-shirts

11th-20th prize: A Sakila mascot (MySQL’s pet dolphin)

You may phrase your MySQL 5.1 Use Case Report freely, but the more colour you give it, the better your chances of winning.

By submitting the report, you also volunteer for appearing in our upcoming Use Case articles. We will consider any data you submit in your Use Case Report as public and quotable in our reports. However, you may ask us to anonymise certain aspects of your use case, should you otherwise not be able to participate in our competition.
