Shreedhar is announcing a new build release for Shoal 1.1, the GlassFish dynamic clustering framework. Version 1.1 is work in progress and offers a JoinedAndReadyNotificationSignal, multiple clusters support for the same member (useful for Sailfin's Converged Load-Balancer), cross subnet clustering support, etc.

The most important driver for the Shoal project lately has been the Sailfin project (now in alpha stage). Compared to HTTP, SIP sessions are smaller in size but greater in number so this has been a very interesting set of constraints for this group management and data replication technology.

If you're new to the technology, Shoal is at the heart of the GlassFish v2 clustering architecture and uses JXTA as an underlying technology. This article is a nice introduction if you're new to the technology which is also used in other projects such as GreenFire.

Sailfin V1 Alpha is now available

Project SailFin, built on top of GlassFish, provides a platform for developing and deploying converged Java EE and SIP Servlets applications. SailFin V1 Alpha is now available for download.

SailFin is already the basis for the projects like Presence Support in Web Synergy, DFC Application Router in ECharts, Sun Labs Conference Manager etc. The project team is now working on completing the implementation of the recently approved JSR 289 Final Release. Final release of SailFin V1 is expected by end of this calendar year.

JSR 289: SIP Servlet v1.1 is now Final

The SE/EE Executive Comittee of the JCP has approved (results) JSR 289, the SIP Servlet 1.1 Specification that is the core for SailFin.

The final specification is not yet available but the PFD 2 should be very close. The first public release of SailFin will be aligned with GlassFish v2.1 and will happen around the end of the year; updated roadmaps are due in a few weeks.

ECharts is a state machine-based programming language which supports Java as a host language. E4SS (ECharts for Sip Servlets) has introduced native support for SailFin some time back. This special build consists of a JSR 289 based application router, which can be directly deployed to SailFin SIP container.

Recently, Gregory Bond from AT&T, has come up with a tutorial style article describing in detail how to use E4SS, Grails and SailFin to implement, build and run a simple converged telecom application. Also checkout some screen shots at the end of the document.

Network Manager is a SailFin module that handles Grizzly integration, message parsing, ByteBuffers, thread pools etc. Ramesh, the module owner for network manager layer in SailFin Project, has started a series of blogs [1,2] explaining the knobs available to configure SailFin SIP container for high performance.

Ted and ICEfaces team has put together a demo showcasing "AJAX Push" and SIP communication. The demo is about setting up a call between sip phones of two users from a web browser. The web page gets updated with the details of the users as soon as the sip phone is registered (or unregistered) with the demo SIP application in SailFin.

The demo is packaged as a SipServlet archive (.sar) file and can be directly deployed into sailfin by dropping into the autodeploy directory. The full source code of the demo is available in the svn repository. There is also an one minute video podcast of the demo.

Ericsson Mobility World has posted more information about Service Development Studio (SDS) integration with SailFin (Sun GlassFish Communications Server). A new release of SDS supports SailFin and an extensive tutorial explaining the integration is available here.

On the netbeans front, Vince reports the availability of SIP Application Development Module Suite from the netbeans update center. Newest bits are available in the lib/tools/netbeans directory of the SailFin installation itself.

b37 of SailFin is available now and it contains a number of fixes for performance and longevity. Check previous entries on Sailfin at TheAquarium also.
