Speaking at the 2008 MySQL Conference & Expo

I’ve had one session accepted at the 2008 MySQL Conference & Expo (which is a good thing since I only submitted one session for nomination).

This year’s session is titled How to be Normal, a Guide for Developers. I decided to return to my old Normalization talk, but lean more towards the practical than the theoretical this year and work on common scenarios faced by developers rather than walk a person through the normal forms like I have previously done.

Here’s the abstract I’ll be sending in to replace the ugly one I submitted with:

At some point in every software project involving a database it becomes necessary for the developers who created (or inherited) the project to step back and take a look at their database. Many projects have a database schema that has evolved over time, with columns added here and tables added there, increasing complexity and often adding redundancy. Super-tables grow with more and more columns making ALTERs slow and backups difficult.

In this session MySQL author and speaker Mike Hillyer will guide the audience through the principles of database normalization and review some common normalization scenarios encountered by many application developers.

Topics include:

What is normalization and what are its benefits?

What are the normal forms?

First Normal Form

Second Normal Form

Third Normal Form

And so on…

Normalization Scenarios

Relationships and Joins

How Much is Too Much?

This session is intended for a beginner to intermediate audience and is applicable to developers and administrators who deal with database design.

The Normalization talks are always well received and cover important principles, hopefully if you’re at the conference you can come in and participate.

Are we there yet?

I’m at the COMSWARE conference in New Delhi this week, speaking on a panel with several luminaries on the topic “Convergence Nirvana : Are we there yet?”.
“Are we there yet?” is what I wanted to ask everyone after my 24-hour getting-to-India adventure, but everything worked out fine. Even made friends with the crew from my flight, who got to the bar at the hotel about the same time I did.

I thought I’d jot down some notes as I was thinking about the convergence topic. Here are some obvious things that probably need to be converged over the short term:

IM

E-mail

Voice calling

Voice mail

Identity

Authorization

Are we there yet? Not quite. Yes, protocol standardization is one part of that, but with the emergence of XMPP, SIP, Jingle, etc. we’re getting pretty close to having all of the building blocks. What we don’t have yet is converged solutions. At Jabber, Inc., we working toward that converged nirvana, but we’ll need a little while yet to arrive there.

However, once you have the basic functionality in place, keep in ind that every group of users will have a difference set of extensions, integrations, and business logic that they require. As such, ease of extensibility is going to be paramount. Since the sorts of solutions that will be build must include all sorts of state management, asynch network communication, threads, locking, and other hard things, the protocols themselves should be optimized whenever possible if we’re going to have a shot. Yes, I know, you can always hide complexity behind a library. However, if the protocols are too hard, you end up with a limited set of choices for libraries, and the ones that are worth using will be very expensive.

Really, I’m not trying to slam particular protocols here. This is really meant more as a call to action to the completionists, begging those who have a vested interest in the complexity that locks out competition to have a care for the families of the poor application programmers… Please, make the protocols easier so that we have a chance to go home once in a while.

In California, for Rails Seminar

Sitting in my hotel room in downtown San Francisco, CA. Mr. London himself, James Adam (of Rails Engine fame)... and I have been spending some time wandering around the area, which is where I grew up. We ventured over to Berkeley and down the coast to Santa Cruz yesterday. :-)

We then took the Cable Car late last night…

...and had food with almost too much garlic.

Today, we’re heading down to Santa Clara, CA to check-in at AjaxWorld Conference and Expo, where we will both be speaking tomorrow at their Ruby on Rails seminar.

Congrats to Steven Baker…who got married this weekend?! He’ll be meeting us in Santa Clara later and speaking tomorrow as well.

If you’re going to be at the conference, be sure to introduce yourself. :-)
